Are cholesterol lowering drugs beneficial or harmful ?

Good documentary regarding the effectiveness of the cholesterol lowering drugs.
It also shows how research could be manipulated for financial gain.

I agree that it is a good documentary but I'm not sure how balanced it is.

That's pretty much the response I'm hearing privately from medical people here.
Wait and see, I reckon.

As a person with very high chlorestoral thats already had a heart attack years ago before I started on statins, it a no brainer that chlorestoral build-up on the arteries causes heart attacks, no one can dispute that, its also pretty darn logical that reducing the levels of chlorestoral significantly in the blood will reduce further deposits of chlorestoral in the arteries and so reduce heart attacks, what is not logical is this bogus pseudo science study by the ABC attacked by doctors all over the world.

Something of a rebuttal from a doctor at the ABC;

Hi Lyndon
Thanks.
This matter should be considered in totality and not in isolation. Please consider the antibiotic debate and many more issues relating to the use of drugs addiction etc.

I have a great respect for doctors and drug companies for what they do. However they have their limitations.

We should have a holistic approach to our health and well being.

Many people believe that they can handover the full responsibility of their health to their doctors and fail to see that prevention is the best cure.

SarathW I just finished 2 books this summer, one "The Overdo$ed America by John Abramson, M.D. and Our Daily Meds by Melody Petersen. page 47 of Our Daily Meds, Mara G. Aspinall the president of Gencyme Genetics, said an Average of 50 percent of people treated with individual drugs are reveiving treatments that are not efficacious for them." In a discussion with academics in 2006, Ms Aspinall explained that 30 to 70 percent of patients get no benefit from taking statins, which are designed to reduce cholesterol. also references om
n p 163-66, 167, 184...The book talks a bunch about blending marketing and science, made me very uncomfortable. Reminded me of another book I read called Salt Sugar and Fat, (http://michaelmossbooks.com/books/salt-sugar-fat/) how the fast food and convenience food industry has hooked us on horribly bad food through our basic instincts. From what I've read it isn't cholesterol that causes buildup of plaque, it's inflammation caused by unbalanced blood pH from an acidic diet, meds, stress, and so on. The Overdosed America is a Doctors Journey through the changes in allopathic medicine and why he got out of it. Pretty eye opening, he talks a lot about statins and how horrible they are starting on page 15, he goes into how cholesterol is needed by every system in the body as well. Eating cholesterol rich foods isn't the problem... Also the doctor goes over how changing behavior, diet, exercise are key to treating most illnesses. The doctor also talks about the rigging of studies by the pharmaceutical industry and paying off doctors, dumping tons of data on them, all sorts of tricks... as does the book our daily meds. Hope this helps!

I'm of the opinion that cholesterol lowering drugs are probably useful in certain situations like after a heart attack.

But if you haven't had an ischemic event, then you shouldn't be taking cholesterol lowering drugs even if you have high cholesterol. Try changing your diet first.

Cholesterol lowering drugs, and all pharms for that matter, should be a last resort.

This is an opinion, not medical advice.
Peace,
James

Harmfull. Statins prevent your body from manufacturing its own, healthy cholesterol, which is not the cause of cardiovascular disease, and doesn't cause heart attacks. What the cholesterol does, is work as an immune system response to help heal the damage in your arteries caused by too much sugar and processed junk. Instead of drugs, refrain from eating non foods and You wont have any problems. Not everyones cholesterol should be identical, also, cholesterol levels in blood can change by the time of day, and more significantly by time of year, the drug cartels keep lowering what is considered "high cholesterol" in order to get more people on their toxins. When you stop the endogenous manufacturing of cholesterol, you essentilly diminish your immune system. The food cartels get you sick and the drug cartels keep you that way, always remember; We cant outsmart mother nature.

Also, fireman are responsible for the fires. Whenever there is a fire, fireman are on the scene. Lets reduce the number of fireman so that fewer houses get burned.

Actually here in southern California, we've had several firefighters arrested for setting fires, job security I guess......
