Looking for a Sutta on Speech

Postby Unrul3r » Tue Nov 19, 2013 5:29 pm

Hello all,

I can't seem to find a particular sutta about speech which deals with praising other extensively, praise oneself in brief (and only if asked), reveal fault in others in brief (and only if asked) and reveal faults in oneself extensively.

Does anyone remember which sutta it is?

With metta.

Possibly an echo from DN 31?

(4) "In four ways, young householder, should one who sympathises be understood as a warm-hearted friend:
(i) he does not rejoice in one's misfortune,
(ii) he rejoices in one's prosperity,
(iii) he restrains others speaking ill of oneself,
(iv) he praises those who speak well of oneself."
"And how is it, bhikkhus, that by protecting oneself one protects others? By the pursuit, development, and cultivation of the four establishments of mindfulness. It is in such a way that by protecting oneself one protects others.

"And how is it, bhikkhus, that by protecting others one protects oneself? By patience, harmlessness, goodwill, and sympathy. It is in such a way that by protecting others one protects oneself.

Sure seems likely to be the one; I really need to lay hands on a copy of the AN, alas...
