Unfettered at last, a traveling monk,
I pass the old Zen barrier.
Mine is a traceless stream-and-cloud life,
Of these mountains, which shall be my home?

The Windmills of Your Mind

Round like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending on beginning
On an ever-spinning reel
Like a snowball down a mountain
Or a carnival balloon
Like a carousel that's turning
Running rings around the moon
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes on its face
And the world is like an apple
Whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Like a tunnel that you follow
To a tunnel of its own
Down a hollow to a cavern
Where the sun has never shone
Like a door that keeps revolving
In a half-forgotten dream
Or the ripples from a pebble
Someone tosses in a stream
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes on its face
And the world is like an apple
Whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Keys that jingle in your pocket
Words that jangle in your head
Why did summer go so quickly?
Was it something that I said?
Lovers walk along a shore
And leave their footprints in the sand
Was the sound of distant drumming
Just the fingers of your hand?
Pictures hanging in a hallway
Or the fragment of a song
Half-remembered names and faces
But to whom do they belong?
When you knew that it was over
Were you suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning
To the color of her hair?

Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning
On an ever-spinning reel
As the images unwind
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind
Hic Rhodus, hic salta!

My niece had a singer at her wedding and this is one of the songs was sung. It brought tears to my eyes. I thought of Ron (those that remember me from e-Sangha days may remember that story) and how I wish he could hear the words.

"Say you need me with you now and always..." Say you need me with you here beside you." "Say you love me." Any of those words would have made all the difference in the world.

Then, my niece walked down the aisle to Pachelbel's Canon, which played at the end of my marriage ceremony. I have been listening to the many versions out there of this song!

While in the middle of the winter it's summer
Then in the middle of summer it's freezing cold
And I wonder, who's wet behind their ears?

A broken world, well ain't that a bummer?
To get from mammoth to pizza took us 27, 000 well spent years

I'm gonna get out of the broken world
I'm just about to discover new land
Get out of the broken world and start a meditation retreat (band)

Turn on the tv I see troubles of mankind
There is a weird old man who's sayin'
"I'm the decider, you've gotta stay that course"

All of a sudden I've got Shakespeare on my mind,
All of a sudden Richard goes
"horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse"

I'm gonna get out of the broken world
I'm just about to discover new land
Get out of the broken world and start a meditation retreat (band)

Higher than lordship over all earth,
Higher than sojourning in heavens supreme,
Higher than empire over all the worlds,
Is Fruit of Entrance to the Dhamma Stream.

Two rather lovely pieces by the great Seán Ó Riada:

>> Do you see a man wise [enlightened/ariya] in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.<< -- Proverbs 26:12

This being is bound to samsara, kamma is his means for going beyond. -- SN I, 38.

“Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?” HPatDH p.723

Aflame with the fire of passion, the fire of aversion, the fire of delusion.
Aflame, with birth, aging & death, with sorrows, lamentations, pains, distresses, & despairs ......

Seeing thus, the disciple of the Noble One grows disenchanted. SN 35.28

Hey kitztack, what sutta is your signature from? That's a great line.
“Life is swept along, short is the life span; no shelters exist for one who has reached old age. Seeing clearly this danger in death, a seeker of peace should drop the world’s bait.” SN 1.3
