What is Advantageous?

Post by Bhikkhu_Samahita »

Friends:

Which Mental States are Advantageous?

Cut Short:
Mental states not mixed with any diluted form of Hate are Advantageous!
Mental states not mixed with any diluted form of Greed are Advantageous!
Mental states not mixed with any diluted form of Ignorance are Advantageous!

Image

In Detail:
At whatever moment any advantageous thinking pertaining to this sense sphere is
accompanied by gladness and associated with knowledge, directed to any sense object,
such as a visible form, a sound, a smell, a taste, a touch, or a mental object, then right
at that time arises momentarily: Contact, feeling, perception, intention, idea, directed
thought, sustained thinking, joy, happiness, one-pointedness of the mind, the ability of
faith, energy, awareness, concentration, understanding, the ability of mind and gladness,
the ability of vitality, right view, right motivation, right effort, right awareness, and
right concentration! There arise the powers of conviction, enthusiasm, acute awareness,
focused concentration, and understanding. There arise the powers of shame, of fear of
consequences of wrong action! There arises non-greed, non-hatred, non-confusion, and
non-possessiveness! There arises no ill will, but right view, shame and fear of wrongdoing!
There is then bodily calmness and serene tranquillity of mind. Then emerges then mental
and bodily readiness, facile mental and bodily adaptability, and rational rectitude of mind!
There is then present: Awareness, clear comprehension, mental tranquillity, insight, energy,
and non-distraction! These and whatever formless immaterial states these causally produce:
These are the -Advantageous- mental states...

Comments:
Diluted forms of Greed are: Desire, lust, yearning, longing, craving, hoping and wanting...
Diluted forms of Hate are: Anger, rage, irritation, resentment, opposition & stubbornness...
Diluted forms of Ignorance are: Confusion, uncertainty, doubt, perplexity and hesitation...

Enjoying an Anchor ...

Post by Bhikkhu_Samahita »

Friends:

Faith is an advantageous Hand, Wealth and Seed:

Image

Using it as a tool they have faith. Just this act of having an anchor is itself faith.
Its characteristic is trusting, having confidence in & being fully convinced about.
Faith's function is to clarify, like a filter, and to promote entrance like a door.
Faith manifests as devoted non-wavering, and as a quite resolute determination.
Its proximate cause is something to have faith in, and hearing the Saddhamma.
It should be seen as a hand because it takes up and holds all advantageous states,
as mental wealth since it leads to future prosperity, and as a seed that initiates
growth of all that is truly good.

Image

The Blessed Buddha said:
Faith is all being's best wealth;
Dhamma praxis brings best happiness;
Truth indeed has the best taste of all;
Living in and by understanding is best!

Sn. 182

Confidence is the seed,
Self-control is the rain,
Understanding is the yoke & plough,
Shame and Conscience is the pole,
A well working mind is the yoke-tie,
Awareness is the ploughshare & goad.

Sn. 77

By Conviction is the flood crossed;
By endurance is the ocean crossed;
By effort is one's suffering quelled;
By wise understanding is one purified!

Winning by Awareness!

Post by Bhikkhu_Samahita »

Friends:

Winning the Highest by Awareness!

Image

Once when the Venerable Anuruddha was dwelling at Savatthi in
Jeta's Grove, in Anathapindika's Park, a number of Bhikkhus went
to the Venerable Anuruddha & exchanged polite greetings with him.
Then they sat down and asked the Ven. Anuruddha: Venerable Sir:
What has the Venerable Anuruddha developed & cultivated so that
he has attained to his famous greatness of direct knowledge?
He answered:
It is, friends, because I have developed and cultivated these four
Foundations of Awareness, that I have won great direct knowledge!
What four? Here, friends, I dwell constantly contemplating upon:
1: The Body only as a formed group, neither as me, lasting, nor pleasure!
2: The Feelings only as passing sensations, neither as mine, nor pleasure!
3: The Mind only as temporary mentalities, neither as I, nor any self!
4: All Phenomena only as mental states, neither as substance, nor real!

while eager, clearly comprehending, & fully aware, thereby removing
any desire & frustration rooted in this world! It is, friends, because
I have developed & cultivated these Four Foundations of Awareness,
that I have become empowered with the suprahuman forces: I see &
understand as it really is, any present defilement, the obstruction of,
the cleaning of, and the emergence from all the subtle jhana states,
all the deliverances, all concentrations, & all higher mental attainments.
It is, because I have developed and fully refined these indeed supreme
Four Foundations of Awareness, that I by the full elimination of the
mental fermentations, in this very life enter & dwell in the stainless
release of mind, & release by understanding, realizing it myself with
direct knowledge, gained through direct experience...

Make Yourself into an Island and Lamp!

No one Other can ever Save You!

The Blessed Buddha once said:
Make an island of yourself,
Be lamp and light for yourself,
Make yourself your refuge:
There is no other refuge!

Make the Dhamma your island,
Make the Dhamma your lamp & light,
Make Dhamma your refuge;
There is no other refuge!

Digha Nikaya 2.165

No Other
By self alone, is harm done.
By self alone, does one suffer from own evil.
By self alone, is harm left undone.
By self alone, is one purified & thereby saved.
Both destruction and salvation is the work of yourself.
No-one can purify another...

Doubt Creates Hesitation!

Post by Bhikkhu_Samahita »

Friends:

How to cure hesitant Doubt and Uncertainty!

Image

Noticing Doubt-&-Uncertainty (vicikiccha) emerge can make it fade away:
Herein, Bhikkhus, when Doubt-&-Uncertainty is present in him, the bhikkhu
notes & understands: "There is Doubt-&-Uncertainty in me", and when this
Doubt-&-Uncertainty is absent, he similarly notices and understands: "Now
no Doubt-&-Uncertainty is in me". He also fully understands how unarisen
Doubt-&-Uncertainty arises. He also understands how to leave behind any
arisen Doubt-&-Uncertainty, and he understands how left and eliminated
Doubt-&-Uncertainty will not arise again in the future. MN 10

Image

What is the feeding cause that makes Doubt-&-Uncertainty arise?
There are doubtful, unclear, indeterminable, and inconclusive ambiguities!
Often giving irrational and unwise attention to such matters, is the feeding
cause of the arising of yet absent Doubt-&-Uncertainty, and the feeding
cause of worsening and aggravation of Doubt-&-Uncertainty, that already
emerged. SN 46:51

ImageImage

What is the starving cause that makes Doubt-&-Uncertainty cease?
There are advantageous & detrimental states, blameable and blameless,
average and excellent states, and dark and bright states, frequently giving
rational and wise attention to these, is the starving cause for prevention of
unarisen Doubt-&-Uncertainty, and the starving cause for the elimination
of Doubt-&-Uncertainty, that has already appeared. SN 46:51

ImageImage

Some advantageous reflections regarding Doubt-&-Uncertainty:
There are these 6 things, which help to throw out doubt:
1: The state of being learned in the Buddha-Dhamma.
2: Examining the Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha.
3: Understanding the advantageousness of Moral Discipline.
4: Being decided and convinced about the 3 Jewels.
5: Sympathetic, clever and helpful friends, who knows directly.
6: Explaining talk and teachings that can dispel doubt.

Image

Doubt-&-Uncertainty is like a Desert:
Doubt-&-Uncertainty is just as when a rich man travels through a desolate
desert where there is no food and much danger.
Freedom from Doubt-&-Uncertainty is like when he has crossed the desert,
and gradually reaches safety near a village, a secure place, free from danger.
There he is relieved. DN 2

Image

So is it when doubts about one of the 8 objects of doubt has arisen. See #
Doubting whether the Master really is a perfectly Enlightened One or not,
one cannot become assured of it with confidence. Unconvinced one remains
unable to attain to the paths and fruits of Nobility. Thus, as the traveller
in the desert is uncertain whether robbers are there or not, he produces in
his mind, again & again, a state of wavering & vacillation, a lack of decision,
a state of anxiety, and thus he creates in himself an obstacle for reaching
the safe ground of the Noble Ones (ariya-bhumi). In that way, is sceptical
doubt like travelling in a barren and dry desert!

#: They are, according to the Vibhanga: doubt in regard to the Buddha,
the Dhamma, the Sangha, the (threefold) training, the past, the future,
and the conditionality of dependently arisen phenomena.

ImageImage

Doubt and uncertainty can only be indecisive about which action to choose
and thus paralyzes the skeptic by hesitancy leaving the problem unsettled!
Doubt can only be eliminated by examining and scrutinizing the object much.

Image

Once elderly yet undecided brahman Dhotaka asked the Buddha:

I see here in the world of beings divine & human, good ones,
who lives simply by possessing nothing. I thus bow for you All-around Eye.
Please Sakyan, release me from my doubts!

The Buddha answered: No one in this world, Dhotaka, can I ever release
from doubting. But knowing the most excellent Dhamma, you will cross the
raving ocean of vacillating uncertainty.

Dhotaka now more confident: I admire, Great Seer, that peace supreme,
all stilled, knowing which, living aware and detached, I'll go beyond the
imprisoning entanglement of this world.

Then I will teach you that peace even right here, not just hearsay words,
understanding which, living aware and detached, you will go beyond the
incarcerating entanglement of this world.

Teach me as your friend, O best one, the Dhamma of detachment so that I
may know directly, so that I, as unaffected as space, may live right here,
at ease in peace, calmed, stilled and not dependent on anything...

Whatever you are aware of, Dhotaka, above, below, across, or in between;
know this as a chain to this world! Thus, do not create any craving for any
form of being in existence, any form of new becoming or any non-becoming!
Sutta Nipata V 6

Understanding the 3 Basics!

What is Right Understanding of the 3 Facts!

The Blessed Buddha once said:
It is impossible, Bhikkhus and Friends, and cannot ever happen,
that one possessed of right understanding should ever regard
any phenomenon as really permanent ... or
any phenomenon as lasting happiness ... or
any phenomenon as an identical, unchanging, same, and 'my self'...
But it is quite possible, that an ordinary worldling may indeed have,
entertain and act upon such naive, false and distorted beliefs...

Blinded by Ignorance & Driven on by Craving!

The Blessed Buddha once said:
There will come a time, Bhikkhus, when all the mighty oceans will evaporate,

beings who, blinded by Ignorance and obsessed by Craving, are hurrying

All Phenomena are Mental States!

Awareness of Phenomena just as Mental States!

Image

The Blessed Buddha said about Contemplation of Mental Objects:
How does one reflect on Phenomena just as Mental States?

The 5 Hindrances:
One notes & knows when mind is dominated by sense-desire, anger,
lethargy & laziness, restlessness & regret, & doubt and uncertainty!
One notes & knows when mind is released from sense-desire, anger,
lethargy & laziness, restlessness & regret, & doubt and uncertainty!
One understands how there is emergence of sense-desire, anger,
lethargy & laziness, restlessness & regret, & doubt and uncertainty.
One understands how there is overcoming of sense-desire, anger,
lethargy & laziness, restlessness & regret, & doubt and uncertainty.
One understands how there is elimination of sense-desire, anger,
lethargy & laziness, restlessness & regret, & doubt and uncertainty.

The 5 Clusters of Clinging:
One understands such is form, feeling, perception, construction,
and consciousness. One understands such is the causes of origin
of form, feeling, perception, construction, and consciousness.
One understands such is the causes of ceasing of form, feeling,
perception, construction, and consciousness....

The 6 Sense Sources:
One notes & understands such is the eye and the forms and the
consequent obsessive sense-addiction arising dependent on both.
One notes & understands such is the ear and the sounds, the nose
and the smells, the tongue and the flavours, the body and touches,
the mind & the thoughts & the consequent obsessive & compulsive
sense-addiction there arises dependent on both.

The 7 Links to Awakening:
One notes & knows when mind contains awareness, investigation,
energy, joy, tranquillity, concentration and equanimity.
One notes & knows when mind is without awareness, investigation,
energy, joy, tranquillity, concentration and equanimity.
One understands how there is arising of awareness, investigation,
energy, joy, tranquillity, concentration and equanimity.
One understands how there is complete fulfilment of awareness,
investigation, energy, joy, tranquillity, concentration & equanimity.

The 4 Noble Truths:
One notes, understands and knows as it actually is:
This is Suffering! This is the Cause of Suffering!
This is the End of Suffering! This is the Way to End Suffering!

Thus lives one while considering own internal mental states, or the
external mental states of others, or the mental states of both...
One notices how any new mental state arises, & how it passes away.
Or one is simply aware: There is this mental state now; just enough
for mindful and clear comprehension of the present mental state.
Caused by this acute aware presence and clear comprehension of
any current momentary mental state, one comes to live independent,
unattached, by not clinging to anything in this world whatsoever....
Thus does one dwell immersed in contemplation of the mental states!

The Blessed Buddha once said:
May all creatures, all living things,
all beings without any exception,
experience good happiness only!
May they not fall into any harm.
Anguttara Nikaya 4.67

Image

Solitude is happiness for one, who is content,
who has heard the Dhamma and clearly sees.
Non-violence is happiness in this world:
Harmlessness towards all living beings.
Udana 10

Image

The Noble is not one, who injures living beings.
The Noble is one, who never injures living beings.
Dhammapada 270

Image

Ever are the true disciples of the Buddha
well awake and quite aware. Constantly they
meditate both day and night on Harmlessness!
Dhammapada 296-301

Image

The one who has left all violence,
who never harms any being at all,
whether they are moving or still,
who neither kill, nor causes to kill,
such one, harmless, is a Holy One!
Dhammapada 405

Without Worry ;-)

Free from Fear by Release from all Anxiety:

Image

The young deity Subrahma once asked the Buddha:
Always frightened is this Mind!
Always agitated is this Mind!
About present problems.
About future problems.
If there is a release from this worry & anxiety,
please then now kindly explain it to me...

Whereupon the Blessed Buddha declared:
I see no other real safety for any living being,
except from control of the senses,
except from the relinquishment of all,
except from awakening into Enlightenment!

Sumedha's Similes..

Post by Bhikkhu_Samahita »

Friends:

What made the Bodhisatta seek Enlightenment?

Image

Sitting in his upper chamber the immensely rich young brahmin Sumedha thought like this:

Not seeking Purity:
When a man soiled in dirt sees a pure lotus covered lake, but does not seek it to get a clean bath,
it is not an error of the lake, but a fault of the dirty man...
Even and exactly so: When there is the great lake of the deathless Nibbana capable of purifying
all the mental defilements, yet it is not being sought by the mentally polluted being, then it is not
an error of this immortal state, but a fatal fault of the mentally contaminated human being...

Neglecting the Way:
When a man surrounded by robbers does not flee, though there is a possible way to escape, then it
is not an error of this open way, but a fault of the man neglecting to break free by this road...
Even and exactly so: When there is this blessed Noble 8-fold Way leading straight to absolute
freedom, yet it is not being used, then is not an error of this supreme method, but a fault of the
man failing to follow, clear and develop this ancient path...

Rejecting the Doctor:
When a seriously sick man does not seek the help of the doctor, who knows the effective cure,
then is neither a fault of the doctor, nor of the medical treatment, but a mistake of the sick man!
Even and exactly so: When there is this sublime Teacher, who can cure all mental diseases & thereby
allay all frustration and pain, yet he is not being sought, then - indeed - it is not a fault of this guide,
but a grave error of anyone mentally unhealthy and defiled and thus prone for downfall...

These thoughts made the young man give away all his richness and become recluse in Himalaya:

Later he met the Buddha Dipankara and at his feet made the determination to be come Buddha!

He made himself into a bridge over some mud so Buddha Dipankara's feets would not be soiled.
