Interesting reading. Thanks.

I wonder how often monks in the US get called "dude" or "pal", and how often in the UK get called "mate", "bloke" or "fella"

The postman hands us the letters saying "Cheers mate". (Except for one special delivery driver who said he was Tamil and would not give me the parcel until he made it clear what he thought about all Buddhists.)

I guess one could understand that the postman just said it out of habit, but the Tamil driver... ha ha! Was it worse than the usual flak you get from people who have a bone to pick with Buddhists?gavesako wrote:The postman hands us the letters saying "Cheers mate". It was more about politics in Sri Lanka (he would not accept that we don't have anything to do with it). Negative comments from locals are rather rare in the south of England, but apparently get more frequent as you go up north...

Hi Gavesako I am from the north of England and most northerners consider southernersgavesako wrote:It was more about politics in Sri Lanka (he would not accept that we don't have anything to do with it). to be rude and most southerners think northerners still use gas light and raise ferrets.
Please be assured a warm welcome and a cup of tea awaits any weary traveller who
crosses the north south divide.
Kind Regards Paul.
Dipping a toe in or pulling myself from a swamp...yeah that covers it for now.

That is great to hear. (BTW, we also drink Yorkshire Tea here in the south.)
