Uposatha Days 2014 United Kingdom

Post by waterchan »

Hello Bhante Pesala or anyone else,

Does anyone have a link to a calendar for 2014 Uposatha days? The link on Bhante's website is a 404 Not Found.

Or is there a formula to use so that those of us handy with math and programming can calculate it ourselves?

Kind regards,

Thanks, but that link is exactly the one I found to be broken.

Yeah, and that leads to the same page which hosts the broken link I posted above.

Thanks for your time, Chris. I suppose I'll just wait until Bhante reads this :)

The link is not broken. Maybe it was just a temporary server error.

As it says at the top of the News Page, where the link to the calendar is:

WaterChan is having problems because he's following a direct link to the PDF, which is not permitted.

The redirect should go to http://www.aimwell.org/help.html where it explains:

Off site links like this should now be correctly redirected to the Help page.

Now this link gives me a 404
http://www.aimwell.org/help.html

And this direct link does not redirect to the above page, but gives a 404 as well. http://www.aimwell.org/2014.pdf

The link in the "what's new" section of bhante's mirror site works for me.

Here's a link about the Full Moon Days in 2014, sincere there is a correlation with the Moon Days and the Uposatha schedule.

I'm not sure if I understand Bhante Pesala's Uposatha calendar on this page.

My understanding is that:

1. This calendar is specifically for the UTC time zone and does not correspond to Uposatha days in other countries.
2. According to the calendar, the Uposatha days for April are 1st, 14th and 28th.

Correct?

  1. The Moon Phases are for the UK, but may sometimes need adjustment to fit the 14/15 day cycle specified by the Vinaya
  2. Incorrect. The Uposatha days shown for April are 14th and 28th. The previous new moon was on March 30th. The time of sunrise is shown for the first of each month
For example, the actual times and dates for March/April are:

New Moon = March 30th @ 19:46 pm
Full Moon = April 15th @ 8:43 am
New Moon = April 29th @ 7:15 am

Since an Uposatha day is never held on the 16th or 13th day after the previous one, April 15th has to be adjusted to April 14th. This happens to agree with the Forest Sangha calendar, but I calculate the dates based on the Moon Phases data, which I assume to be scientifically accurate for the UK. I see no good reason to base UK observance days on Burmese or Thai calendars.

Thanks for the clarification, Bhante. I did think it was weird to calculate Uposatha observance days based on the home country of one's tradition, and the other calendars on the Internet don't seem to mention the time zone it was calculated for. Or maybe some monasteries do use the same Uposatha dates of their tradition's home country?

Hmm, an Uposatha calculator app might be a programming project to consider. The formula appears to be rather obscure though.
