Research shows Porn viewing = less grey matter in brain

Post by cooran »

Hello all,

Research shows an association between porn viewing and less grey matter in the brain.

Is it dependent on where said brain is situated....?

That might explain why genuinely enlightened beings like Buddha and Arahants are celibates. Also, why those who develop meditation gradually get less interested in sex.

The researchers acknowledge that they are uncertain at this stage as to what the results mean, however, they have a couple of hypotheses. It could be that excessive stimulation of the reward system has resulted in alterations in neural plasticity. On the flip side, it could be that men with less gray matter in the striatum require more stimulation than others and find watching porn more rewarding, which could lead to an increase in porn consumption.

Hey, I don't care either way, but the title on this thread is misleading.

I'd be willing to bet that it isn't the porn viewing that causes the loss of grey matter, but rather, the constant and wasteful loss of semen that normally goes along with it.

I agree, the equals sign in the titile is misleading because it implies causality, when this article does not.
Since the researchers cannot prove that it is the porn that caused this decrease in gray matter volume, they have called for further investigation
.

And what really does this study point at? That people who watch a lot of porn are less intelligent? That shouldn't be surprising, since an intelligent person with many intellectual interests wouldn't be inclined to spend so much time watching porn anyway.

But your body just releases excess semen on it's own though...

There are a great many studies that are just too frivolous.

Hi kasina,

firstly, when exactly is it that the body 'releases excess semen on it's own', as you say? Maybe for some younger men, who are more prone to wet dreams this may happen, but the semen thus released was not 'excess' in any way, the problem was more likely something they ate, or too much sexual stimulation, but it's not a normal or desirable thing, and the body has no need for wet dreams, nor for expelling semen (unless you are trying to conceive a child). Your latter comment is accurate, however, as yes the nutrients and energy expended by the body in manufacturing it, are reabsorbed if the semen is not spent. Also, could you please clarify what you mean by, "there's still no gain to be had..." ?

Howdy Manas.

I suppose nocturnal emissions would be the main way, and your point is valid.

By "no gain" I meant that those nutrients were in the body to begin with, and were never necessarily lost (in the case of not expelling it at all). Furthermore, it's worth mentioning that most of the semen, which is a combination of various secretions, is formed around the same time it is needed, if you follow.

I suppose I agree with you mostly, but I'm curious as to how you think not expelling it could have a positive effect on ones well being (genuinely curious to know).

I can't speak for manas' reasons but I know that some Taoists' sexual theory is that expelling semen weakens the body. It has to do with qi-energy in the body, I think. There are some popular Taoist forums on the internet if you're interested in learning more.
