what are you doing when you have illness pain?

Post by wolf1 »

what are u doing when u have illness pain? for example a headache or pain in the arm or anything pain. pains disturb anapanasati meditations. i can not focus on the breathing good when i get pain. i don't give attention to the weak pain maybe 2 or 3 times at a 60 minutes long meditation and then i am in Samadhi.
i take pills when i get any pain for example menstruation pain because i want doing meditation. but i feel lethargy after 30 or 40 minutes meditation since pills makes me sleepy.
many peoples say we should see the pain. of course sometimes i look at to the pain and i see how it become weaker, how it become stronger , how it weaker again, how it become stronger again, how it disapear and how it return. and i notice . notice: become weaker, notice become stronger notice when pain goes and et cetera. but we will don't attain jhana or Noble level if we just see the pain for hours and we neglect breathing meditation. so is it why i ask what are u doing when u get pain.

Pain can disturb anapanasati, but can become integrated and smoothed during seated satipatthana. So, since anapanasati is trying to head to jhana, instead - when the pain is great - seek out a balanced vipassana-samatha practice from the seated position, when pain becomes that much of an obstacle.

Vedananupassana is the practice, an aspect of satipatthana generally - calmly noting unpleasant feeling at X or Y sense sphere, mindfully preventing papanca based on that, and so on.
  • "And how is it, bhikkhus, that by protecting oneself one protects others? By the pursuit, development, and cultivation of the four establishments of mindfulness. It is in such a way that by protecting oneself one protects others.

"And how is it, bhikkhus, that by protecting others one protects oneself? By patience, harmlessness, goodwill, and sympathy. It is in such a way that by protecting others one protects oneself.

I agree. Vedananupassana is my main practice and it is very useful to objectively observe all sensations, pleasant, neutral or unpleasant. I am also pragmatic so if I am experiencing such an intense pain that it stops me functioning in my day-to-day life, then I take paracetamol or other analgesic.
Kind regards,
Ben

Another satipatthana practice is mindfulness of the hindrances that are arising with the pain or mindfulness of the state of mind.

Pain and headache cause by menstruation is not illness; rather ‘weakness’.
This is what my wife did.

Prevention steps:
No cold drink, no carbonated drink, no Coca-Cola, no ice shake, no coconut juice drink; no any kind of drink that is cold in nature or result in ‘bodily cold’ in nature (eg. Coconut juice drink).
1 scoop of ice cream once in a while, I think is OK, for the time being; perhaps? Ultimately, drop this as well.

Drink hot soup, tea or coffee. Fruit juice that’s not cold, may not taste nice; however human is good in getting use to new habits.

Improve health:
Walk a lot in the park with your love one or friends, or cycle. Don’t jog.
Drink nuts + fruits + vegitable smoothies, prefer not cold either. I guess this part common for westerner.

Try spirulina. If the instruction says take 10 a day, starting with taking 5 a day instead, 3 in the morning and 2 in the nite. If instruction says take 20 a day, take only 10 a day and split 5-5 morning and nite. Let your body get used to it. Beware of the complication, some may have this issue.
If you do not experience heat after a few weeks, slowly increase the quantity until you follow the prescription.

Or take 1 capsule of Cod Liver Oil, start with 3~4 days once before you slowly increase to follow the prescription.

Don’t start with both. Choose between Spirulina and Cod Liver Oil; else will not know which one is causing complication if there is one. Cod Liver Oil seems to have better immediate positive effect compare to spirulina, but for the long term health, I believe spirulina is better.

Pls google on these two items, find out which brand is ‘clean’ that is conveniently available to you. Pay special attention to the source; where it comes from. ‘Clean’ subject to your acceptance level; of course!

May you be well!

i know it : if we have any pain while anapanasati meditation then refocus on the nostrils and notice the pain. then the pain goes.
