Happy Uposatha! I think I might make the two hour journey to Wat Metta for the day. Just trying to gage my tiredness right now to see if I can drive since it's not even quite 5 am here yet.Khalil Bodhi wrote:Happy New Moon Uposatha! https://www.facebook.com/events/143226269170464/
Edit: Scratch that, my Pops is sick so I guess I'll be looking after him for the day.

Re: Uposatha Observance Club
Today is Magha Puja!
This day, sometimes called "Sangha Day," commemorates the spontaneous assembly of 1,250 arahants in the Buddha's presence. One thousand of the gathered monks had previously achieved Awakening upon hearing the Buddha's delivery of the Fire Sermon; the remaining 250 were followers of the elder monks Ven. Moggallana and Ven. Sariputta. To mark this auspicious gathering, the Buddha delivered the Ovada-Patimokkha Gatha, a summary of the main points of the Dhamma, which the Buddha gave to the assembly before sending them out to proclaim the doctrine.

Asalha Puja
Asalha Puja - Tuesday 19 July at 19h30 in Pinhal de Frades
The Asalha Puja celebrates the first structured speech that the Buddha gave after his enlightenment and is celebrated on the full moon of July (the full moon of the eighth lunar month of the Indian calendar). In this speech gives the name of 'Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta' and was with him that 'the wheel of Dhamma was set in motion' (here Dhamma means teaching). It contains the essence of the subsequent teaching of the Buddha, addressing the 'Four Noble Truths'. It was at the end of this speech, after Kondanno to have fully understood, which began the Buddhist monastic order.

Today is full moon!
On the Wan Phra days53 I would undertake the dhutaṅga practice of nesajjik54, that is, to refrain from lying down for the whole night. I could actually manage to do this easily, just considering it as a trivial thing to do.
53 The observance days on the full, new and half moon
nights, which occur once every seven or eight days.
54 Thai for nesajjika in Pali.

'Extra-super Moon' to brighten sky on November 14, NASA astronomers say
Get ready to mark November 14 in your stargazing calendar — astronomers say this is the day the Moon will be at its closest point to Earth in 70 years.
The event, known as the supermoon, occurs when a full or new moon passes closer to earth in its monthly orbit.
The coincidence will take place three times in 2016 — October 16, November 14 and December 14.
But the November supermoon is special because it will be "the closest full moon to date in the 21st century", according to NASA.
It will become full just two hours after its closest approach to Earth, arguably making it an "extra-super Moon".
It is not expected to appear again until November 25, 2034.

Last Full Moon of the Year 2016!
"In the practice of Buddhism, you must find your own way." It is up to you to seek and discover the way to transcend suffering. "The right way to look is to look within yourself. The path is within the heart and mind of each one of us Then be steadfast and remain diligent until you reach your final destination. "
(Mae Chee Kaew, 1901-1991).
