I have lay in the gutter for a minuet or two now I am going to sit for a while!
Blog, Suttas, Aj Chah, Facebook.

He who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that. His reasons may be good, and no one may have been able to refute them.
But if he is equally unable to refute the reasons on the opposite side, if he does not so much as know what they are, he has no ground for preferring either opinion …
...
He must be able to hear them from persons who actually believe them … he must know them in their most plausible and persuasive form.

I am glad you changed clothes first. The real reason for eating only once a day on Uposatha: it is impossible to eat when wearing a white shirt without getting food stains on it!
"As I am, so are others;
as others are, so am I."
Having thus identified self and others,
harm no one nor have them harmed.

no, its to increase your awareness of the food as it splashes on your clothes
PS I asked a question to you on the forgiveness thread don't think you saw it?

Sorry, Manapa. Maybe I thought the question was rhetorical? I'll buzz over there and give a response....

Re: How are you celebrating New Year's Eve as a Buddhist?

Hello all,

I had a wonderful night at Dhammagiri. We had as many people turn up as on a Sil day - and considering it's an hours' drive from the edge of the city, that was a pleasant surprise.

A visiting monk, Ajahn Khemasiri, who is Abbot of the Dhammapala Kloster – Switzerland located in Kandersteg in Switzerland, gave a 50 minute talk and guided meditation on "Forgiveness" of each other and ourselves.

We had a short break for sparkling soft drinks, tea/coffee, marshmallows, jubes and dark chocolate - the Ajahn Dhammasiha gave an hours' talk and guided meditation on adhitthana [adhi.t.thaana]: Determination; resolution. One of the ten perfections (paramis) ... of which our New Years Eve Resolutions are a very weak copy. We all had food for thought about our own Determinations for 2010. There was a further break for refreshments and talk.

Then Glow Sticks were handed out and we began a half hour walk up the very very steep hill in single file and noble silence (apart from panting for breath). We circumnambulated our new little Bodhi tree which is not doing so well in the heat and drought, and then also did the same for our other Bodhi tree at the top of the hill which is doing splendidly.

Then at the high point where there is a Dhamma Wheel (Dhammacakka) on a pole, we circumnambulated the Wheel and had auspicious Chanting in Pali by the monks and lay people. Then we chanted the Karaniya Metta Sutta in english and radiated lovingkindness in all directions. We could see the lights of Ipswich and of Brisbane in the far distance.

A very inquisitive possum was jumping from branch to branch high up in the eucalypt trees and wallabies could be heard pounding through the bush. The full moon was high in a cloudless sky - absolutely beautiful. The only small problem was that the temperature at midnight was 23 ºC = 73.4 ºF with between 70 and 80 percent humidity. Everyone was soaked in perspiration - which does nothing for ladies hairstyles and make-up - but who was noticing. :-)

metta

Sounds a bit scary. :rolleye:

We had someone setting off fireworks at the end of the court at midnight and that was good, especially because we live on the corner of the court. 8-)

What wasn't good was the some people kept randomly letting fireworks go until just past 1am and kept freaking out our dog Penny... and her freaking out kept me awake!

Earlier in the evening a storm came through and we sat out on the deck with the dogs eating corn chips and salsa. Bennett made himself a "lightning hat" to protect him from lightning. He looked funny in the hat. :jumping:

Metta,

Ajahn Brahm gave a talk at Dhammaloka and then several hundred of us did some Metta meditation from 2009 through to 2010. A nice way to bring in the new year.
Four types of letting go:

1) Giving; expecting nothing back in return
2) Throwing things away
3) Contentment; wanting to be here, not wanting to be anywhere else
4) "Teflon Mind"; having a mind which doesn't accumulate things

Blog, Suttas, Aj Chah, Facebook.

He who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that. His reasons may be good, and no one may have been able to refute them.
But if he is equally unable to refute the reasons on the opposite side, if he does not so much as know what they are, he has no ground for preferring either opinion …
...
He must be able to hear them from persons who actually believe them … he must know them in their most plausible and persuasive form.

I spent 5 nights at my local Wat, and left today (New Year's Day). Last night we chanted in Pali SN 56.11: Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta — Setting the Wheel of Dhamma in Motion.
It looks kind of short in the normal English rendering, e.g. http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka ... .piya.html, but when expanded it takes over half an hour to recite. This bit about the Devas goes on and on when done in full:
Hearing these words of the earth deities, all the Catummaharajika devas proclaimed: "The Matchless Wheel of Truth that cannot be set in motion by recluse, brahmana, deva, Mara, Brahma, or any one in the world, is set in motion by the Blessed One in the Deer Park at Isipatana near Varanasi." These words were heard in the upper deva realms, and from Catummaharajika it was proclaimed in Tavatimsa... Yama... Tusita... Nimmanarati... Paranimmita-vasavatti... and the Brahmas of Brahma Parisajja... Brahma Purohita... Maha Brahma... Parittabha... Appamanabha... Abhassara... Parittasubha... Appamana subha... Subhakinna... Vehapphala... Aviha... Atappa... Sudassa... Sudassi... and in Akanittha: "The Matchless Wheel of Truth that cannot be set in motion by recluse, brahmana, deva, Mara, Brahma, or any one in the world, is set in motion by the Blessed One in the Deer Park at Isipatana near Varanasi."
Unfortunately, our teacher has been very sick (actually he was in hospital) so the two of us on retreat were left to our own devices, which was interesting. I recalled Ajahn Tiradhammo quoting Ajahn Chah to the effect that it can be "good to deal with your doubts yourself..."

I did have the regular morning http://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/auth ... ml#morning chanting, which has the basic stuff about anicca, dhukka, and anatta to remind us what we are looking at...
Rūpaṃ anattā,
Form is not-self,
Vedanā anattā,
Feeling is not-self,
Saññā anattā,
Perception is not-self,
Saṅkhārā anattā,
Mental processes are not-self,
Viññāṇaṃ anattā,
Consciousness is not-self,
Sabbe saṅkhārā aniccā,
All processes are inconstant,
Sabbe dhammā anattāti."
All phenomena are not-self."
and the Evening Chant http://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/auth ... ml#evening, which, as Manapa pointed out on another thread, has the asking for forgiveness...

One of the things I really appreciate about such retreats is the joy and compassion one feels from, and the appreciation one feel towards, the lay people who come in to feed the monks (and retreatants).

Metta and Happy New Year...

Mike
