Deletions

If a post is deleted, does the author always get a notification? It seems a lot of my posts are going missing and I don't know if they are being deleted, lost by the system or if my memory is at fault.

After doing a bit of digging I found that a number of posts were removed by moderator staff who felt that the removed posts were off-topic and contributed nothing to discussion but humour and jokes which had the potential to derail threads. Had your posts assisted in discussion, in all likelihood they would have remained. All members must be cognizant of the fact that Dhamma Wheel is an international discussion board and statement made in jest, jokes and attempts at humour can be offensive in some cultures. As per the terms of service, Dhamma Wheel staff reserve the right to remove any post, without warning or correspondence, that we deem as inappropriate.

sometimes I have thought that my posts have been deleted then realised I was on the wrong page/thread or not far enough down the page.

personally I would like to know when a post was deleted and what it said so I could see where the mistake happened, plus this would give me a chance to rework the post if it was a communication issue rather than being off topic, but the mods and admins will at times be very busy so it is best that they keep a uniform moderation policy than one which would possibly take allot more of their time.

When a post is written in good faith but deleted because it is seen as not conforming to the rules of a particular subforum, it would be nice if it could be sent back to the author with a quick PM so that (s)he could repost it elsewhere.

Greetings Dan,

Often it is, especially if it's just a single post. When there are multiple posts that need to be moved or deleted for whatever reason, sometimes it's not practical... particularly where multiple authors are involved.

If you have a specific example of a post of yours that went this way, let me know via PM which topic it was and I'll happily resend you the text. Same offer applies to others too.

I see from your avatar that you have been a member here since March 2009. To claim ignorance of the TOS, particularly the special guidelines of the Classical subforum (where your post was removed) and Abhidhamma sub-forum is unacceptable. If you do not wish to abide by the TOS then you and your posts will be treated accordingly.

I am not claiming ignorance. What I posted was not off-topic since the origins of Mahayana were under discussion and I thought that a scholarly opinion on the matter would be helpful.

My approach to the rules is to exercise them with discretion, but you are the mod and not I. I am fine with that. The above was a suggestion, not a complaint.

Any post within the Classical forum which does not reference the Tipitaka and/or ancient commentaries are off-topic and are subject to removal. The whole point of the Classical forum is to provide a venue for those members who are seeking a deeper understanding of the Mahavihara point of view. As such, any post which does not present the Classical Mahavihara pov, or does not seek clarification of the Classical Mahavihara pov, is liable for removal. The fact that the OP was asking about the origin of the Mahayana is irrelevant as he was seeking a Classical perspective.

I make no apology for strictly enforcing the guidelines for the Classical forum. It is one of the very few places within the Internet where discussion of the Classical pov can be conducted without unwanted interference or noise.

Please be mindful of the guidelines of the Classical Mahavihara forum. I use my discretion as a moderator to enforce those guidelines strictly for the benefit of those who seek clarification and guidance of the Mahavihara understanding.

I respect your PoV, Ben, and as I said I make no complaint. The suggestion was (at the discretion of the Mod) to send the post back to the poster. I will not be making the same mistake but somebody else might and if it's a lengthy well thought-out post or one typed out from a book, then it's especially nice to have it back for possibly sharing elsewhere.

As I said Dan, you have been here nearly a year and you should be familiar with our moderation style. Newer members usually receive a courtesy pm , if I have the time, and I almost always put a reminder in thread informing users that off-topic posts will be removed without warning. "Deleted" posts are rarely deleted - just quarantined in the Admin forum.
