Re: What you interested in about Buddhism?
Greetings Thai_Theravada,
Welcome to Dhamma Wheel!
What I like about the Dhamma is the way it helps reduce suffering and leads to more happiness in life.
I've always known that commercialism wasn't for me, but it wasn't until I discovered Buddhism that I realised there was a happy alternative.
I try to practice the Noble Eightfold Path as best as I can, and even though I don't have the support of a local Dhamma community, I find spiritual friendship here amongst friends at Dhamma Wheel.
Metta,
Retro.

Re: What you interested in about Buddhism?
Why are you surprised?
Buddhism is now a global religion.
Theravada is the most ancient school.
Tibetan Buddhism has huge prominence in people's minds originally due to the invasion of China in 1950, and the extraordinary upheaval it caused ever since.
so Tibetan Buddhism is also widely practised.
There are perhaps more westerners practising Theravada as taught by the Buddha, than ever before.
I would say that the majority of Western Buddhists learnt about Buddhism because Christianity (the inherent national religion) was not a path they saw as one they wanted to adhere to.

Re: What you interested in about Buddhism?
When I first started going to a Thai temple in London many years ago Thai Theravada , a lot of the younger Thai people would ask the same question. There we were surrounded by all that the west had to offer, why was I interested in Buddhism ?
That of course was when Thailand was less prosperous than it is now.
I suspect that now many Thai people have seen the deep unhappiness of many people in the west, they might be less surprised at western interest in the Dhamma.

Where I am from, just down south...Islam is the majority...Buddhism is no.2 (Theravada-mainly from the Thai and Sri Lankan Traditions, being the most popular ones, seems to be a formidable force...we had great figures like The late 'Tok Raja' and The late 'Chief Reverend')I'm from Thailand, where Theravada Buddhism is national religion.
Times have changed....and in favour of the Buddha Dhamma fortunately...and I'm quite surprise that many of you interested in Buddhism
Suffering and its cessation...So, what's things that you interested most about Buddhism?
Chanting, meditation, Uposatha, study...and the list goes on...and how you practice for daily life?
Re: What you interested in about Buddhism?
Welcome. The possibility of freedom from addiction and attachment was what lead me to the Dhamma.
Liberation is the inevitable fruit of the path and is bound to blossom forth when there is steady and persistent practice. The only requirements for reaching the final goal are two: to start and to continue. If these requirements are met there is no doubt the goal will be attained. This is the Dhamma, the undeviating law.

Thanks for your views
I used to hear about Thai Buddhist and Foreigner Monk :
Thai Buddhist says: Foreigner can be a Monk?
Foreigner Monk says : Why? Only Thai have Dhakk?
Indeed, The question like this is our tradition
to greeting for our new friend.

Reminds me of one conversation I had with my late grandmother's neighbour...I used to hear about Thai Buddhist and Foreigner Monk :
Thai Buddhist says: Foreigner can be a Monk?
Foreigner Monk says : Why? Only Thai have Dhakk?
Me: And where did the Buddha come from?
Neighbour: Of course China lah!
I rest my case...
