Need help translating pali chanting

Post by khantibalo »

I am translating a chanting book of a local Sri Lankan community. Most of the verses are well-known, so there were no problems in translating them.
However there are some passages that I cannot translate since they seem to be specific to Sri Lankan buddhism.
I would appreciate your help in translating them.
Please beware that there may be errors in the pali text below, since it is a result of conversion from what seems to be manually typed text.
Dhātu vandanā

Buddhaṃ dhammaṃca saṅghaṃ sugata tanubhavā dhātuyō dhātu gabbhē
Laṃkāyaṃ jambudīpē tidasa puravarē nāgalōkē ca thūpē

Sabbē buddhassa bimbē sakala dasa disē kēsalōmādi dhātuṃ
Vandē sabbēpi buddhaṃ dasabala tanujaṃ bōdhi cētiyaṃ namāmi

Bhinna muggappamāṇēna bhinna taṇḍula sannibhā
Mahantā majjhimāveca khuddakā sāsapūpamā
This is veneration of the Buddha's relics. I could roughly translate the first and the third gatha, but I couldn't understand the meaning of the second one, especially its second line...
Daḷadā vandanā

Ēkā dāṭhā tidasapurē ēkanāga purē ahu
Ēkā gandhāra visayē ēkāsi puna sīhalē
Catussō tā mahā dāṭhā nibbāna rasa dīpikā
Pūjitā nara dēvēhi tāpi vandāmi dhātuyo

Lōkēkanātha vadanambuja rājahaṃsaṃ
Veneyya komuda vanaṃ kumudākarantaṃ
Addhindukāra vararūpa virāja mānaṃ
Vandāmi sādhu mamalaṃ jinadanta dhātuṃ
This is veneration of Buddha's canine teeth. I can roughly understand the first gatha, but the second one has a number of words I couldn't find in the dictionaries.

There is one more passage
jayo munindassa subodhi mūle
ahosi mārassa parajāyosi
uggosayuṃ deva gaṇa vasana (vasanna?, pasanna?)
etena saccena jayantu tuyhaṃ
Monks chant this while tying a protective thread on a layperson hand. I cannot understand the third line. Please help.
You can listen to this chant (see attachment).

Hello khantibalo,

I would suggest that you post your request on this group - it has some very knowledgeable and helpful members.

Pali · The Pali Collective :: Mailing List

This is a forum for anyone with an interest in Pali language and literature, as well as Pali translation works. The oldest Theravada literature is written in Pali. Understanding Pali is like holding the key to the rich contents of Pali Tipitaka. Although a large portion of it has been translated into several languages, it can be appreciated and understood in greater depth when studied in its original language.
Main discussion topics:
1. Tipitaka and sutta study
2. Pali language and literature
3. Theravada Buddhism
4. Samatha (Tranquillity) and Vipassana (Insight) meditation
5. Sutta study tools and methodology
6. Pali translation theory and practice

Need help translating pali chanting

Hello to the jai munindassa-
the translation is:
