Re: If you become a Sotapanna will you know that?

I think if someone is arguing online that they're a sotapanna, that pretty much guarantees they're not.

Just my opinion.

Re: Vipassana on anti-depressants

Does anyone know if taking antidepressant excludes you from sitting a 10-day course (Goenka)? No, it's fine. They will ask you in the application form but just tell the truth and it's not a problem. I used to process some applications and we were mostly looking out for people who had severe mental ...

Re: Favourite Dhamma Quote

Dhammapada Verse 50:
One should not consider the faults of others, nor their doing or not doing good or bad deeds.
One should consider only whether one has done or not done good or bad deeds.

Re: More Sri Lankan monks get into politics!

Please don't exaggerate, Sarath. ...the country is going through a famine due to the Chinese debt-driven foreign exchange problem. There is no famine in Sri Lanka. There's a shortage of some foods. Definition: famine , severe and prolonged hunger in a substantial proportion of the population of a re...

He was an excellent writer and teacher, his books really helped me.
Do we know if he attained a particular level of enlightenment?

They're just children, can't really be blamed. And they're 10 precepts, not full bhikkhus.

Enjoy!
The best advice I have is: take a wristwatch or alarm clock and hand you phone in for safekeeping. Your phone will destroy your retreat completely.
Flight mode is not sufficient, nor is simply turning it off.

Re: Survival and Cannibalism

I think some people are so terrified of death, they'll do anything to stay alive including eating other people to survive.
Most Buddhists I know are okay with the idea of dying (and rebirth) so maybe we can't understand.

Re: Microchip

I guess it would be as bad as bhikkhus with gold fillings in their teeth. Inside their body & usable as money. Some insane bhikkhus worry about their gold or silver fillings, but most accept it doesn't qualify under that rule. The tooth fillings issue has been discussed a lot in monastic communi...
