Re: Digha Nikaya Commentaries

Bhikkhu Bodhi's
The All-Embracing Net of Views (The Brahmajala Sutta and its Commentaries) is an excellent translation of the first sutta of the Digha Nikaya.

Re: micchādhimokkho/viparitādhimokkho (Abhidhamma question)

Since adhimokkha is one of the "particulars" it accompanies cittas of the four jartis and thus it can be kusala, akusala, vipaka or kiriya as we have seen, the "particulars" do not arise with every citta

Just a general thought: Are these surveys effective when you can choose every one of the 10 options?

Re: Breakoff from "Gurus in Vajrayana"

. The impression I got was that meditation was quite exclusive to monastics in the old days. This is supported by the relatively few suttas that are actually addressed to laypeople. The practice given to laypeople consisted mainly of dana and buddhanusati AFAIK. - The Bhikkhu Sangha are clearly the...

Re: It depends what you mean by rebirth

The dispeller of Delusion (pali text society) trans. Bhikku Nanamoli: page 121, volume1: "this division too should be known, namely momentary death (khanika- marana), conventional death (samutti marana) and death as cutting off (samuccheda-marana) also path of purification xliii “ There are three ki...

Re: Relying on the suttas over modern monastics

The Suttas are translated by modern monastics so you are never relying exactly on the Discourses over them. Unless you've learned pali or are guided by someone who knows pali but still it all comes down to interpretations. Best approach I think is to listen to different voices and build your own un...

Re: Ajahn Pannobhasa is disrobing

Also, it urges the lay people to be sceptical about the ordained Sangha -- I would certainly think twice about offering alms to a monk after seeing these videos -- who knows -- the monk may have these views? Until now, I have been utterly unaware of these tendencies in the Sangha -- and I have been...

Re: Are there mendicants among the Nagas?

Yes, it is possible after that, that other nagas might have attempted to ordain - presumably they would have been stymied at the questioning stage though.

Re: Are there mendicants among the Nagas?

There was only the one time- after that incident the question that all postulants are asked was added to the ordination procedure "Are you human?"

Re: Are there mendicants among the Nagas?

Here is a quote: SN 29.3 Uposatha Sutta: The Uposatha (1) At Savatthi. Then a certain bhikkhu approached the Blessed One, paid homage to him, sat down to one side, and said to him: "Venerable sir, what is the cause and reason why some egg-born nagas here observe the Uposatha and relinquish [concern...

Re: Ajahn Pannobhasa is disrobing

ok I have now had time to review recent articles on the venerable bhikkhus blog and found several I would not endorse. In the meantime this thread has deteriorated so I will lock it until I have time to remove a few posts. Edit: I just removed quite a number of posts. But may consider removing more....

Re: Ajahn Pannobhasa is disrobing

That's funny -- the monk in question is full of hate speech, gender contempt, race hate and implicit encouragement to violence and openly promotes that via interviews with a Hitler clone -- but my questioning his view is 'hate speech' -- you couldn't make it up. Go gaslight somewhere else. mod note...
