Re: Why did the same Dhamma given by Devadatt not enable 500 monks to become Sotapanna?

Why did the same Dhamma given by Devadatt not enable 500 monks to become Sotapanna? Even though Devadatta disagreed with Buddha about his demand he still taught the same Dhamma as Buddha's for his disciples. However, when Sariputta went to Devadatta's monastery and gave the same Dhamma, 500 of Deva...

Re: When & why did the teaching on momentariness emerge?

Hello RobertK, Why Kaccānagotta like teaching, and "anatta" wasn't taught ( at least the suttas don't explicitly mention it ) to his 5 ascetic friends, or to the leper to attain Stream Entry? Dear Alex In the suttas you mention, the Kuṭṭhi Sutta and the Dhammacakkappavattana sutta, the Bu...

Most baffling is at 4:06:17 on the postures of the body. Even now while sitting here practicing mindfulness of body postures, sitting, I get lost in computer then back to both knowing I am sitting and typing. I get up to go to the kitchen and don't even know I am walking but thinking of what I want...

... And if "no self" teaching was so pedagogically important, why wasn't it all over the suttas and initial instructions that the Buddha gave? How about the many suttas on Dependent origination, they are all listing various conditions revealing that there is no self behind phenomena, only...

Re: Who are the Suttavadins? The dark truth behind Delson Armstrong, Bhante Vimalaramsi, and TWIM

Greetings, As for Ven. Vimalaramsi, I appreciated his open-ness and candour about how he'd dead-ended his progress in the first part of his monastic career through adherence to practices not found in the Suttas. I found it strange then when he began to promote adherence to practices not found in th...

Re: When & why did the teaching on momentariness emerge?

Thanks, very interesting. Thanks for trying to help. Here is a small transcript from the video lecture above: When scientists talk to non-scientists about particle physics, they talk about the smallest building blocks of matter: what you get when you divide cells and molecules into tinier and tinier...

Re: When & why did the teaching on momentariness emerge?

Could you decipher those formulas, my maths is very limited. But this is simple division! Are they saying that components of atoms arise and cease, or are they saying light travels very fast (but not mentioning arising and ceasing)? Sorry, but you seem to have a lack of understanding of even the ba...

Re: When & why did the teaching on momentariness emerge?

Rather than a video could you provide a citation where its shows that at the subatomic level the particles are actually arising and disappearing at the rate you mentioned earlier... Sorry, it looks like I made a mistake: in this case the numerator should not be 1, but the speed of light - c. So it'...

5 10 Vajira This is a heap of sheer formations: Here no being is found . “Just as, with an assemblage of parts, The word ‘ chariot’ is used, So, when the aggregates exist, There is the convention ‘a being.’ So, you are saying that a car is nothing but a pile of it's parts? And if that so, then ther...

I recently climbed a mountain over 4 days. A 45 kilometre hike up two mountain passes. Absolutely exhausting. It was the Inca trail. After four days of hiking our troop reached Machu Picchu - the goal!

Sounds amazing. :anjali:

Re: When & why did the teaching on momentariness emerge?

There is absolute voidness of any self, suññatā. These elements you mention effort, intention, are simply conditioned mental factors that perform their various functions, no need to invoke a self who does this. Then how could there be kamma, virtue, Buddha, Dhamma, Sangha? Thanks for the good quest...

Re: When & why did the teaching on momentariness emerge?

Yet, according to the Theravada kalapas arises and falls away instantly. They are utterly gone. They can condition the next and so there is a continuity but still even the kalapas that make up what we call a block of concrete are replaced each moment. But what about dhammas? What said kalapas have ...
