Re: Can you follow Buddhas teachings and still dislike people?

I have a hard time understanding nibbana definitions, especially when I read the 37 factors.
feeling of equinimity is one of the 7 factor of enlightenment. so nibanna is still conditioned by those factors?

Re: Can you follow Buddhas teachings and still dislike people?

I agree with Thanissaro's words personally and that is one phrase that stuck with me from that talk. Liking people or disliking people is sakkaya ditthi, it's conditioned phenomena. I see liking people as an opinion, it's based on conditioning. I thought loving kindness, metta is unconditional, and...

Re: Why should practice be framed by ready-made answers?

op, I feel that your post are more or less skeptical doubt, which is totally normal but one of the 5 hindrance. it is a hindrance in that it can stop all progress and practice. personally, what convince me was the monks description of the jhanas (ajahn brahm and ayya khema talks about the jhanas are...

Re: Can you follow Buddhas teachings and still dislike people?

wish... weird way to put it. the 4 supreme emotions are not wishful thinking, they are emotions to develop and cultivate in the heart. its a feeling, not a wish or a positive thought. The usual formulation is "may all beings be happy," "may all beings be free from suffering" etc...

Re: Higher jhanas and desensitization (a possible philosophical problem in Buddhism?)

It seems pretty natural (and I suppose one could say "biologically programmed" -- though that framing would not have occurred to me) to choose a greater pleasure over a lesser one, and that's my limited understanding of the jhanas. Why would the Buddha not make use of human natural predil...

Re: Can you follow Buddhas teachings and still dislike people?

This depends a lot on how you translate "Metta". Lovingkindness is a very common translation, but it ultimately is probably not accurate. "Mitta" the root of the word means something more like friendliness-- the way I understand that is the term good will (this is also Thanissar...

Re: Can you follow Buddhas teachings and still dislike people?

The Buddha never said you have to like people. Only that you wish them good will. you have to feel love and compassion for every being The Buddha never said that. what do you mean? in order to have equanimity, 1 of the 7 factors of enlightenment, we need the 3 "other" supreme/divine emoti...

Re: Can you follow Buddhas teachings and still dislike people?

the buddha teached us that the 4 supreme emotions are the only emotions worth having: unconditional love, compassion, joy with others and equanimity. unconditional love means impersonal love. we should not restrict our feeling of love for only the people close to us. everyone you meet, you should wi...

Binocular, it seem in Mahayana and theravada, the core teaching and practice remains essentially the same: 4 foundation of mindfulness, 4 supreme efforts, ect. as far as I know, the 37 factors of enlightenment remains the same. https://dhammawiki.com/index.php?title=37_factors_of_enlightenment The t...

before even attempting breathing meditation, you need to have mindulfness of thoughts and body well established in every moment. the 4 supreme efforts should also be practised constantly. https://dhammawiki.com/index.php?title=37_factors_of_enlightenment The 4 supreme efforts Not to let an unwholeso...
