Re: what is ariya jhana?

This passage, however, seems to equate the ariya jhana with the first jhana. The above quote says that the monk first enters and remains in the first jhana and while in that state regards arising phenomena as anicca, dukha and anatta. Could it be that the early suttas were not as technical and stri...

Re: what are your thoughts on taking psychotropic medications for mood disorders?

Sometimes id does, and sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't, it's a psychological disease, and the mind can't heal itself on its own. ADHD is not a psychological disease, but rather a variety of norm. Schizophrenia, depression, PTSD etc. are diseases. I don't know what might prevent one from acces...

Re: what are your thoughts on taking psychotropic medications for mood disorders?

learned to cope with it after I trusted awareness completely. I'm glad it helped :) But, it's virtually impossible to trust your awareness when your awareness tell you the ceiling fan is talking to you. And without knowledge and experience with Buddhas teachings, I would be totally lost, or dead by...

Re: what are your thoughts on taking psychotropic medications for mood disorders?

i may not have captured all of the opinions possible so i added 'other' [update:] two people appear to have voted for "these drugs treat symptoms without fixing the causes" but this option originally said "there is nothing immoral or unethical about taking psychotropic medications". i edited this o...

Re: Guided meditations for anicca, dukkha, anatta

I found an English reading of SN 22.59, Anattalakkhana Sutta, that doesn't skip the repetitions:

I also found a pali chant from Amaravati:

Re: Guided meditations for anicca, dukkha, anatta

I'm looking for good audio/video guided meditations that walk us through the process of contemplating impermanence, unsatisfactoriness and not self. If a guru was skilled in transmitting not-self to spiritually immature minds, they may cause psychosis in those spiritually immature minds.

Re: Best Evidence for Afterlife - BICS ESSAY COMPETITION - $ 500,000 Prize

 What do you call published research on acupuncture? And published research on touch therapy, which is supposed to transmit energy? This stuff is published in medicine journals. But you insist on not accepting the obvious. Drink the water already. If you want to scientifically discuss acupunct...

Re: Best Evidence for Afterlife - BICS ESSAY COMPETITION - $ 500,000 Prize

Of cours you can't. You are merely trying to establish non-science as science and with that you are following the path shared by all irrationalists in modern age which is the age of science. I've already proven you can. What do you call published research on acupuncture? And published researc...

Re: Best Evidence for Afterlife - BICS ESSAY COMPETITION - $ 500,000 Prize

This thread isn't about SETI, but SETI is as valid a research project as is the search for non material phenomena. No. Since there is scientific knowledge about intraterrestrial intelligence SETI is a scientific research project But there is no scientific knowledge that might provide the basis for ...

Re: Best Evidence for Afterlife - BICS ESSAY COMPETITION - $ 500,000 Prize

BICS obviously is an enemy of science and you are violating the term "research". Well, I am not violating anything. SETI is valid research. This thread is not about SETI. The scientific search for non material phenomena is valid. It would be valid if - and only if - there is a scientific hypothesis...

Re: Best Evidence for Afterlife - BICS ESSAY COMPETITION - $ 500,000 Prize

Nothing against that. But applying scientific methodology "BICS"'s endeavour is revealed to be non-scientific (thus "irrational") from the outset. Your objection is to using the scientific method, or to studying areas like this one? First there has to be a hypothesis based on already scientifically...
