Re: Therīgāthā, The Verses of the Elder Bhikkhunīs, Book One, Two, Three and Four (Week of May 2, 2021)

Does the figure of speech "Shattering the mass of darkness" appear elsewhere, or is it restricted to the Therīgāthā? I can't recall seeing it anywhere else. Perhaps it is the result of Sujato's collaboration? Ven. Thanissaro renders tamokhandhaṁ padālayā as “bursting the mass of darkness”. It appea...

Re: Therīgāthā, The Verses of the Elder Bhikkhunīs, Book One and Two (Week of May 2, 2021)

... Often, especially online, it can seem as if people want to convict one another of doctrinal errors; to show that they have got insight into what the Buddha said, and that someone else has not. There is no end of discussion as to the correct meaning of a term. But these women just get on with it...

Re: Therīgāthā, The Verses of the Elder Bhikkhunīs, Book One and Two (Week of May 2, 2021)

“You cry ‘Please be living!’ in the forest. Ubbirī, get a hold of yourself! Eighty-four thousand people, all named ‘living being’, have been burnt in this funeral ground: which one do you grieve for?” “Oh! For you have plucked the dart from me, so hard to see, hidden in the heart. You’ve swept away...

Re: Therīgāthā, The Verses of the Elder Bhikkhunīs, Book One and Two (Week of May 2, 2021)

Aparāsāmātherīgāthā (Another Sāmā) Thig 3.1 In the twenty-five years since I went forth, I don’t know that I had ever found serenity in my mind. I had failed to find peace of heart, or any control over my mind. When I remembered the victor’s instructions, I was struck with a sense of urgency. Thoug...

Re: Therīgāthā, The Verses of the Elder Bhikkhunīs, Book One and Two (Week of May 2, 2021)

Books Three and Four will be the last selections of the week. Any that jump out at you? I really like Thig 3.2 and how Uttamā emphasizes the aggregates, sense fields and elements as the most significant instructions she received from an elder nun. Thig 4.1: for those who not know, Bhaddā Kāpilānī an...

Re: Therīgāthā, The Verses of the Elder Bhikkhunīs, Book One and Two (Week of May 2, 2021)

However I don't mean that, I just meant that the word phassa comes to mind whenever I think of the stimulation of the cells of the eye for the experience of sight; stimulation of the cells in the ear for the the experience of sound; likewise for smell, taste, touch and thoughts. Six types of sense ...

Re: Therīgāthā, The Verses of the Elder Bhikkhunīs, Book One and Two (Week of May 2, 2021)

Sensations are phenomena that are sensed by means of the six sense organs, in other words feelings, including mind-feelings, like thoughts, ideas, memories. See chachakka sutta, six sets of six. Yes that is a great sutta, but all I see is the six sense base (internal/external), consciousness, conta...

Also, it's not a matter of forgetting or remembering. Those are acts of self making, with sankharas or kamma resultants. It is a matter of training to not react, rather be equanimous with regards to the sankharas as they rise and pass away. I appreciate what you’re trying to say, but I’m just not s...

Re: Therīgāthā, The Verses of the Elder Bhikkhunīs, Book One and Two (Week of May 2, 2021)

The body is examined: goiing 'up from the soles' (plural, both feet) obviously up to the top : then down : 'from the tips of the hairs'. Clearly in complete minute detail. How is the body perceived? Through the senses, by observing sensations, sight, sounds, smells, tastes, touches and thoughts. An...

Re: Therīgāthā, The Verses of the Elder Bhikkhunīs, Book One and Two (Week of May 2, 2021)

With the so called 'modern' method of body scanning in mind: Abhayamātutherīgāthā (Abhaya’s Mother) Thig 2.8 My dear mother, I examined this body, up from the soles of the feet, and down from the tips of the hairs, so impure and foul-smelling. Meditating like this, all my lust is eradicated. The fe...

Re: Therīgāthā, The Verses of the Elder Bhikkhunīs, Book One and Two (Week of May 2, 2021)

Glad to see these verses generating so much discussion this early in the week. I think it’s worth continuing on to Book Three and Four and possibly Five (four only has the verses of a single nun). We’ll see how the week goes.

Re: Therīgāthā, The Verses of the Elder Bhikkhunīs, Book One and Two (Week of May 2, 2021)

I adorned this body, so fancy, cooed over by fools, and stood at the brothel door, like a hunter laying a snare. https://suttacentral.net/thig5.2/en/sujato The above sounds rather politically incorrect, in it appears to say women are provocateurs (rather than men are aggressors & impregnators for p...

Re: Therīgāthā, The Verses of the Elder Bhikkhunīs, Book One and Two (Week of May 2, 2021)

Muttātherīgāthā (Muttā (2nd)) Thig 1.11 I’m well freed, so very well freed, freed from the three things that bent me over: the mortar, the pestle, and my humpbacked husband. I’m freed from birth and death; the attachment to rebirth is eradicated. If found the above rather offensive because I have l...
