Re: 📍 On Kāyagatāsati and kāye kāyānupassī, Part 3 (Week of 1/23 and 1/30/2022)

a problem with sati as remembering is that remembering is a sankhara dependent on conditions and not as it implies an act of a controlling mind. Memory is anicca. I agree, and that seems to be why so many of these suttas are describing it as development. If a person does not work to remember these ...

Re: 📍 On Kāyagatāsati, Part 3 (Week of 1/23/2022)

I think that is the difference between “being aware” and “remembering”. Descriptions of sati seem more about memory and recollection than awareness of something immediate. The immediacy is certainly the prompt, but the mindfulness is the knowledge. That is what I found so fascinating about Snp 1.11...

Re: Passaddhi; and a more general question

I think a sutta such as AN 10.3 is essential when reading SN 46.2 since occasionally you see something like this: And what, bhikkhus, is the nutriment for the arising of the unarisen enlightenment factor of rapture and for the fulfilment by development of the arisen enlightenment factor of rapture? ...

Re: 📍 On Kāyagatāsati, Part 3 (Week of 1/23/2022)

I understand what you are saying about how kāye kāyānupassī is translated. Based on these suttas, I think what’s important is that the understanding stays within the nature of the body as opposed to directly on the body. With the latter, it is easy to digress out into the world, i.e., what the body...

Re: 📍 On Kāyagatāsati, Part 3 (Week of 1/23/2022)

Some great stuff here, SDC, but I need to do some careful reflection to be able add anything. However, as I mentioned last week, the more I see the awkward Buddhist-hybrid-English expression "contemplating the body as a body", the less it makes sense. I think the rest of your exposition s...

Re: What is the Orthodox Theravada position on alcohol, narcotics, psychedelics?

I have mentioned also that there is a very highly regarded Western lay dhamma teacher who has told me they have used psychedelics in the past and says they would probably use them in future (as far as I know they do not use drugs of any kind). I am not at liberty to say who they are but they are ve...

📍 On Kāyagatāsati, Part 3 (Week of 1/23/2022)

📚 Thoughts? Do the suttas from the two previous weeks accord with this week? Is kāyagatāsati the development of knowledge about the body? Is the perception untwisted and mindfulness not muddled when the truth about the body is recollected? And not even necessarily when they are immediately apparent ...

📍 On Kāyagatāsati, Part 3 (Week of 1/23/2022)

:reading: I'd like to finish this presentation by bringing MN 119 to a close. As we have already seen, the question posed is, "And, bhikkhus, developed in what way, made much of in what way, is mindfulness of the body of much fruit, of much benefit?" So, we've gone through breathing, postu...

📍 On Kāyagatāsati, Part 3 (Week of 1/23/2022)

:reading: So, let's start with MN 119, set at Jeta's Grove in Anāthapiṇḍika’s park in Sāvatthī. While a group of bhikkhus are discussing how marvelous mindfulness of the body has been described, they are interrupted by none other than the Buddha himself, who, as usual, is curious about the current t...

📍 On kāyagatāsati and kāye kāyānupassī, Part 3 (Week of 1/23 and 1/30/2022)

:reading: What I would like to do for the conclusion of our study of kāyagatāsati (mindfulness of the body) is to examine the key points of MN 119 (Kāyagatāsatisutta). Though, since it converges often with MN 10, 62, and 118, the arrangement below is more of a medley of all four. The goal is to firs...

Re: Where is there a juxtaposition of early dependent origination against its later use as extreme refutation?

... The repeated response I get to many of my posts is that supposedly no one on this forum holds the views I refute. Yet this is demonstrably false by simply searching this forum. Also, frequently some users in the very thread where this statement was made confirm that they hold the position I am ...

Re: Where is there a juxtaposition of early dependent origination against its later use as extreme refutation?

Can you provide a source for your claim that this is a common understanding? I don’t think I’ve seen anyone put it together quite like that. I don't understand this. It is claimed that I'm wrong... I never said you were wrong that it is an interpretation but presenting it as a "contemporary un...
