Re: Is giving old items (cloths etc) unwholsome?

Your link is broken Sarath.

But, obviously giving away items to those who need them, whether used or unused is wholesome. I'm not sure how it could be unwholesome.

Re: Venerable Bodhi on War

So tell me, how is the dhamma doing in Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, previous global centres of Buddhism? Oh that's right it's basically non-existant there now. Your views are simply naive idealism. I said the dhamma 'as an institution' rests on powerful military states, and the above countries are ...

Re: Venerable Bodhi on War

Bhikkhu Bodhi is addressing some hard worldly truths and trying to reconcile them. The reason you're able to practice dhamma at all and not all speaking Arabic now and forced to worship some moon deity and his sidekick, is because of vastly superior military and the scientific revolution. Thanissar...

Re: Venerable Bodhi on War

Others have referenced Bodhi's previous discussion with Thanissaro on war, which echoes loudly. Although I respect Bodhi highly as a academic monk and translator, I was surprised at the time to see his thoughts on war be so at odds with the texts he is good at translating, and fell apart so complete...

You're still using your own yardstick, so you think, to measure others' faith or wisdom. It seems a preoccupation for you That is time best spent focused on yourself. Focus the witch hunt within, if you must.

Re: Future perils of Buddhism.

Buddhism as far as I can see is going to decrease due to counterfeit dhamma. The counterfeit is due to commercialism for the most part.

Re: Is a buddhist arhat equal to an abrahamic saint?

Yes, some abrahamic saints may have been truly impressive people, but they could also be frauds, or something in between. A arahant could never be a fraud, but is also unidentifiable with certainty to anyone but a Buddha, least of all clerical institutions.

Re: Is a buddhist arhat equal to an abrahamic saint?

My answer would be no. One is a private form of enlightenment, the other is an institutional honorific.

Re: Samanera without dependence?

Personally, I can't really understand what Johan is saying most of the time due to either a poor translation app he is using or poor English skills, or potentially some kind of cognitive/learning issue but I too am concerned about his well being. His situation sounds problematic and from what I can ...

Re: Samanera without dependence?

Suppose a samanera just leaves his preceptor right after taking the 10 precepts, goes awol. I think whether the preceptor allows it or not, this is just not something that is acceptable. Maybe not, but there's nothing you can do about, least of all the preceptor. That's the vinaya, it has some area...

Re: Samanera without dependence?

I personally think that a samanera without dependecy basically has no acceptance within the order. I think there is little to no difference between a rogue samanera and a person who just puts on the robes going forth without full acceptance. No, there is a difference in those examples, but it is no...

Re: 'Consciousness without Surface': Not Eternalism?

If you noticed, the point of this post is to try and be open-minded and understand these teachers. I'm trying to understand what they are conveying. I specifically said this wasn't to claim they were eternalist, rather, it is to see the reasons it ISN'T eternalist and to hear out where I could be m...

Re: 'Consciousness without Surface': Not Eternalism?

If I may say so, this is a quite tired subject with innumerable posts on it already. If you are not helped by Ajahns Sumedho or Thannisaro's framing of the self or conciousness, listen to someone else. There is an awful lot of throwing around the label "eternalist" on here, and it is rarel...

Definitely a great passage, especially relevant to a current underlying our culture where one attains social clout based on how offended, oppressed, or insulted they claim to be.

Re: Honoring parents & cousins dealing in killing

Am I breaking precepts if I tie a hook on his line or if I cast line for him or if I help reel in a caught fish? My dad would be very happy if I did these things with him again. Am I still honoring parents? If I go with him to watch, he will push me to help. Where to draw the line? Recently one cou...
