Re: Talk about sīmā stones in Thai tradition

From our perspective one of the more interesting reforms was a decision that underlines the centrality of the sīmā to modern state-building. Article 9 of the Siamese Sangha Act (1902) restricted the establishment of new sīmā within commoner monasteries. From this point on this could only be done wit...

Cetanābhedā and Cinderella: Multiple Rebirths, Bilingual Sermons, and Popular Narratives in South East Asia

Trent Walker: "Cetanābhedā and Cinderella: Multiple Rebirths, Bilingual Sermons, and Popular Narratives in South East Asia" The Cetanābhedā, an eighteenth-century Pali-vernacular bilingual text or “bitext” for public sermons, aims to reconcile local Southeast Asian notions of plural “minds” or “sou...

Re: Is it possible to practice the classical Samatha objects during walking meditation?

Here is a teaching by Luang Por Baen, a recently deceased teacher from the Thai forest tradition: Do walking meditation. Walk a lot. Do walking meditation. Walk a lot. No matter how exhausted you are, walk until you're free from that exhaustion. If you're still exhausted, aching and tired with weak ...

Video of Ajahn Sumedho arriving at Amaravati after a long flight:

He will no doubt be shielded now in the nursing kuti building where only his attendant monk will have direct access to him. Beware of the UK covid variant!

Re: Revealing counterfeit Dhamma: Poems of Matty Weingast published in "The First Free Women" as a version of the Therig

I think this book can best be seen as an example of "American Folk Buddhism": But it is also a largely a product of a particular American subculture, a very educated, white, middle-to-upper class culture that tends to reject things more than most other subcultures. Folk Buddhism includes any a popul...

Re: Revealing counterfeit Dhamma: Poems of Matty Weingast published in "The First Free Women" as a version of the Therig
