Re: Pannobhasa on homosexuality, transsexuality, and pandaka

The object of desire does not matter: the desire itself is what matters.

Re: TheravAdin Monks, lay community and depression

Working with depression is the path.

There are far too many variables to be able to tell why one person succeeds and another doesn't.

Some people have more suffering to deal with than others, and - at times - this isn't indicative of their practice.

Re: Wrong way to practice Anapanasati.

My interpretation of this is to be aware of the whole breath body, but not to take the beginning, middle, and end of the breath body as your meditation subject.

The contact of the breath as a whole is the meditation object.

Re: sankappa equivalent with vitakka or not?

You have the resolve (sankappa) to apply your thoughts to the meditation object (vitakka).

They are not equivalent, but one could be a prerequisite to another.

Re: Insomnia

Focus on breathing in a relaxing and calming way, relax the entire body, and then focus on the breath until you sleep.

Melatonin is a good dietary supplement you can take long term that induces sleep.

Re: If you think you're going to get anywhere with theory

Lay people practice more vigorously (in the West) than they used to as well, so if you combine this with theory then attainments are possible.

However, some people do attain sotapatti just from theory and that is because they have kusala kamma from past actions.

Re: Buddhism and memory

The Buddha's teachings almost entirely deal with what is going on in the present moment, so perhaps he saw expounding on memory as unnecessary. There is paccavekkhana (reviewing, recollecting, bringing to mind), which is a conducted form of memory and not exactly what you speak about. Memory is ulti...

Re: Did the Buddha's teachings improve throughout his life?

Once he realized nibbana, then there wasn't any other progress to be made.

Your question is like asking, "Is there anything beyond 100%?", but it is a valid question.

He answered a couple of my questions. I didn't realize people could stay there with him. how was it? It makes any other meditation...

Wat Yan (Ajahn Suchart) is also samatha oriented. I stayed there this summer. It is in a forest an hour from Pattaya. How long is the retreat? Whats it like there? They give you two weeks at first. It isn't a conducted formal retreat. It's all individual practice, essentially. You can either stay u...
