Re: Uttarakuru lifestyle in jambudivipa?

No. because it only works if everyone is similarly not attached to their possessions. Which we aren't here on jambudibupa. Closest thing to something like that is some old native american tribes or other remote small village tribes and the trial they did in the former USSR.

Re: White clad followers

Celibate and enjoying pleasures using other sences are same? I think thats just how they referred to sex in ancient Pali. Like the third precept literally talks about immoral "sensual" (kame) pleasures and not sexual specifically even though its widely recognized as meaning such. Are you referring ...

Re: White clad followers

"Householders dressed in white" ( gihī odātavasanā ; Skt. gṛhī avadātavasanā ) is simply a term for householders in general, presumably based on the most commonly worn colour. All Indian religions used the term and it doesn't specify that the persons referred to belong to any particular class or ca...

White clad followers

Hello all, I recall in a few texts the Lord Buddha refers to lay followers as "white clad" followers. I am wondering if there are any suttas, or commentaries (ancient or modern) that explain why the lay disciples wear white. Ive only ever seen the wearing white thing be a real policy at just one of ...

Re: 10 Paramis vs. 6 Perfections

Can these lists be reconciled as different ways to categorize the same good conduct? Yes. The 6 paramitas is the same as one of the ways to classify the 10 paramis. Sacca is classified under Sīla and Pañña, Mettā and Upekkhā are classified as jhāna, and Adhiṭṭhāna is considered part of all 6 parami...

Re: what are your thoughts on taking psychotropic medications for mood disorders?

Mood disorders are real. just like autism and adhd are real, its not just "all in their head". These kinds disorders are real and real people suffer from them. And just like with all illness, as we unenlightened beings "have not gone beyond illness", you sometimes have to take medicine to cure or ma...

Re: Risk of taking vaccine jab

Thats like saying airbags in cars kill people in extremely rare cases so you shouldnt drive a car with an air bag because of those extreme rarities even tho not having an airbag in ur car is far more dangerous than having one. You are far more likely to die from COVID then the vaccine. idk where you...

Re: 'drink and drugs that cause carelessness'

I dont think its wise to focus strictly on the literal words as it is to ascertain the reasonable meaning. The Buddha also said women are a distraction of the senses for men and vice versa, despite the fact that he probably knew homosexual people existed. That does not mean men can never be a sensua...

Re: Where to find a monastery that does not bow to statues?

I was just curious. Buddha never said to bow to statues. Bible says something like, "Sorrow/Pity to those who bow to idols which cannot speak and cannot hear and do nothing for you in return. The lord is in his temple." :meditate: Again this is just a cultural difference. In israel bowing was more ...

Re: Where to find a monastery that does not bow to statues?

Some secular meditation groups maybe. Of the various temples ive visited the closest is the Dharma Bum Temple in San Diego. The teacher bows but not the students in the intro class. Problem is they are pretty one of a kind so unless you move there or happen to live there you're out of luck since you...

Re: Gender Equality Poll

It depends what you mean by superior. I think they are equal in terms of personal qualities overall. In terms of strength men are generally superior. In terms of social skills women are generally superior. Overall I'd say it balances it out. In terms of spiritual progress both are capable of the hig...

Re: Are women evil?

This Jataka was taught to a group of monks who were discontented with the celibacy side of the homeless life. To make matters worse, the monks' evil ex-wives were constantly sending them messages cajoling them to come back home. This is actually a good point. it depends on how you define "evil". Ex...

Re: Are women evil?

To be fair, the OP asked for Buddhist texts that say women are evil and jatakas are still Buddhist texts and I greatly enjoy reading them. Ignoring some of the things about the jatakas that make ppl skeptical of them as legitimate words of the historic Buddha, such as many jatakas having people spea...
