Re: Is dhammawiki.com article on 'Last thought moment' correct?
Depends on what you mean by wrong. It is largely a copy and paste from https://www.buddhisma2z.com/content.php?id=223 . So its a faithful summary of the point made by Bhante Shravasti Dhammika. Bhante Dhammika's piece though is largely wrong from a Theravada POV starting with the very first paragrap...

Re: imaginating giving food
In Asia it's very common to do symbolic offerings to the Buddha. It probably is meritorious just not as much as if u actually gave something physical. At the very least it's respect/homage to the three jewels merit even if not Dana merit. Karma is intention but the intention of giving something symb...

Re: It is very rare to hear Buddhist talks in English about what happens after death.
knowing the crucial truth that your last thought at the moment of death is very important. Somewhere i read or heard that it is important to be aware of the breath in this last moment - to be as conscious as possible. Not having any thought in that moment, additionally a heart free of anger an fear...

Re: Ordination is a gamble
So, as long as a monk is virtuous but not an arahant himself, other people's generosity is considered an inheritance instead of a debt. But for those corrupted monks, then yes, they sure will incur kammic debts for leeching off other people's generosity. Arahants are fully worthy themselves but tho...

Re: Ordination is a gamble
Just throwing out some thoughts for discussion: I've been contemplating about ordination, and it dawned on me that it's a gamble - By being completely dependent on other people's generosity for basic living, a monk incurs karmic debt. If he doesn't attain noble fruits within this life time, this de...

Re: Ordination is a gamble
One should practice as if you are in debt to the lay supporters unless you become an ariya, but that is not literally true. In the same way you don't literally owe a karmic debt to your parents unless you bring them to right view even tho the Buddha says this. If you are simply too weak to take on t...

it said that in the earliest monastic rules, nude prostitutes were not considered to be pornographic. but later,The Buddha prohibited public nudity for monks and nun for modesty reason,or might be try to discourage his follower from following the wrong views of naked ascetics of other religions suc...

Re: interpretation of third precept according to Wat Phra Dhammakaya
Someone who owns a brothel and someone who creates pornography might be wrong livelihood because it's dealing in the trade of humans? Not sure. the wrong livelihood jobs are selling alcohol, poison, guns, meat, and people. Not sure if this means slavery and prostitution or only slavery. I've heard ...

Re: What is unknowledge?
are you talking about avijja? or the lack of vijja (knowledge). In that case it is generally understood as not understanding the things about reality like impermenance, anatta, the 4 noble truths etc. and understanding it (vijja) would be what is the opposite of avijja.

Re: interpretation of third precept according to Wat Phra Dhammakaya
Hi. Why do you think womanizing, prostitution, brothels & porn are good peaceful things? I have never said that womanizing nor prostitution are necessarily good and peaceful with no harm, but neither are modern day monogamy committed relationship nor formal marriage good or peaceful. according ...

Re: the size of the animal is one of the factors determining the moral gravity of the act
As the Commentary notes, whether the animal is large or small makes no difference in terms of the penalty, although the size of the animal is one of the factors determining the moral gravity of the act. Could someone please elaborate on this Thanks https://www.dhammatalks.org/vinaya/bmc/Section0022...

Re: Monastery with Vinaya exceptions!
Hello everyone! It seems to me that the Theravada monastery that I regularly visit makes many exceptions regarding the Vinaya and I'd like to read your opinion, as I'm rather baffled. For example: - ordained person admitted sleeping in a regular bed [explained to me that it's warm in Asia (we are i...

Re: Why it's kammically best to be a dullard
If kamma is intention, then it's best to stroll along in life in half a haze, not intending much, not thinking much, not knowing much. Because by informing oneself and by thinking about the possible consequences of one's actions, one would make it harder to still be able to claim innocence. Hence i...
