Re: Are the Jhānas the Buddha learned from his teachers before enlightenment the same as the ones he taught after it?

If we're playing the conjecture game... doesn't it seem implausible that the Bodhisattva was ignorant of the four jhanas while he was spending his years striving... only to connect with them from a memory as a child? It is you who plays a conjecture game here when you say that, not your interlocuto...

Re: first jhana really can be this easy (35 sec. video demonstration)

The colophon is obviously not Ven Buddhaghosa's. I see we'll have to litigate this. More to come.

I don't really care if he was an Arhat or not, but he obviously didn't write that colophon.

Re: first jhana really can be this easy (35 sec. video demonstration)

Buddhaghosa was not an arahant... he even wished for a good rebirth (although apologists will say that the wish was put in by someone else). There is no need to repeat discredited smears of Ven. Buddhaghosa. Indeed, those who say such things are literally lying by this point, unless they are extrao...

Re: 10 Paramis vs. 6 Perfections

I have to drive to Mississauga for a doctor's appointment, so I may not get to it today. The ending of this list, the last three elements in it, appears to be influenced by syncretism with the Tiāntāi sect. Copy-and-paste error. When I wrote this, I thought the Prajñā bhūmis were only found in the w...

Re: Are the Jhānas the Buddha learned from his teachers before enlightenment the same as the ones he taught after it?

From the Aggaññasutta, the Buddha describes the degeneration of the Brahmins from jhānins to village priests: Tesaṁyeva kho, vāseṭṭha, sattānaṁ ekacce sattā araññāyatane paṇṇakuṭīsu taṁ jhānaṁ anabhisambhuṇamānā gāmasāmantaṁ nigamasāmantaṁ osaritvā ganthe karontā acchanti But some of those beings we...

Alas, "there are." The next post will cover Buddhāvataṃsaka Daśabhūmikā material, not that one.

Re: 10 Paramis vs. 6 Perfections

I'm not entirely sure on this but I suspect Theravada's paramitā list came after the Mahayana list [...] There is a paper I plan to link to that suggests just this that you suspect, that a 5 or 6 element list was expanded gradually, but it is very speculative. I don't agree with everything in it, a...

Re: What is the Chinese translation for the term "body witness"

Are you aware that you are quoting a translation of AN 9.43 and not the parallel for it? I had read the OP as wanting the translation used in the parallel, not just any translation. Either way, the 身證者 is used. See the end of the post for more on that. I agree that 者 is acting as "-ist/-er" here. Ju...

Re: What is the Chinese translation for the term "body witness"

Edit: I see. You are linking to a contemporary Chinese translation of a sutta. 身證 without 者 is classical, found in agama texts.
「云何比丘我 為說行無放逸?若有比丘非俱解脫亦非 慧解脫,而有身證。云何比丘而有身證?若 有比丘八解脫身觸成就遊,不以慧見諸 漏已盡已知,如是比丘而有身證

Is the 者 not just marking a term here? You think it is part of the word itself? The DBD and Fo Guang Shang dictionary just has 身證 without 者, because it seems to be merely a grammatical particle.

Re: 10 Paramis vs. 6 Perfections

Here are several irregular lists of 10 perfections in the Daśabhūmikā division of the Buddhāvataṃsaka Vaipulya. Chinese scholastics combine these to form long lists of 30, 41, 52, and other numbers of bodhisattva bhūmis with corresponding perfections. Nearly all of the 10 perfection schema in Mahaya...
