Re: Those with firm positive / negative views on existence of a self: Would your practice change if you were agnostic?
I wouldn't say I have a positive or negative views on the existence of self (not sure what you mean)... but if agnosticism is a view-position on the world, then it would create some obstacles for practice. I'm curious as to how Buddhist-agnostics approach their agnosticism. Also, what you mean by a ...

Re: Directing metta to others
This is quite a systematic method of practicing metta. I think it's okay to use the same people... but we run into different aspects of our being, different benefactors, different friends, many different neutral people, and sometimes many different difficult people... daily. So in that sense it woul...

Re: Meditating intensively during monastery stay
Yes! It's good to meditate. But if you really can't, it's not a big issue. When I first went to a monastery I had great ideas of spending the day meditating in my personal time. While I did have time to reflect in seclusion, forcing myself to meditate in line with my ideas was just too difficult. Me...

Re: buddhism and repression
I think meditation sessions are times when you can approach these repressed emotions. Once the mind stops distracting itself from these emotions, they become clearer.

Re: Allowing Things to Arise (Ven. Sumedho)
The method he describes sounds to me like it involves quite a lot of effort Yes, I think it's actually easier (i.e. lazier) to want to just shut away (sometimes aka "overcome") the things the Buddha calls "defilements". Perhaps it's a defilement itself... it sure does cause a lo...

Re: Ways on how to do dana
I think this is a good way to approach Dāna: One way we are generous with each other here at the monastery is in the realm of truthful speech—an attribute that is essential in one who is walking the Buddha’s path. The notion of truthful speech is deep and profound. It doesn’t simply mean saying thin...

Re: Thai forest tradition vs "non-forest tradition"
The "non-forest tradition" approaches Buddhism from an academic standpoint, while the Thai Forest Tradition places an emphasis on meditation and virtue (sīla, which can be summarized as following the precepts). You will find many teachers like Ajahn Chah (from the Thai Forest Tradition) s...

Re: RAIN
Well it is pretty much how one would approach investigation of reality, although the investigation part in that text seems somewhat overcomplicated and confusing to me. Imho it doesnt get across how the Clear Thought, when applied to the four foundations on moment-to-moment basis, creates wisdom. S...
