What could rouse more conviction?

In AN 7.6 Dhana Sutta (Treasure) it says: "There is the case where a disciple of the noble ones has conviction, is convinced of the Tathagata's Awakening: 'Indeed, the Blessed One is worthy and rightly self-awakened, consummate in knowledge & conduct, well-gone, an expert with regard to the...

my favorite one

on Sila - where do you practice "right speech" online?

When I look around, there don't seem to be that many places to practice right speech. Of course this forum ...

People with a background in western philosophy

The other day I was reading this wiki article on direct and indirect realism https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_and_indirect_realism , which supposedly comes from a branch of philosophy called Phenomenology. The way I understood it was that a person can consider their sense bases to be an accurate...

-yuṃ ending (randhayuṃ)

Doing a bit of Pali learning, I came across this passage (Dhp. 18.248) Evaṃ bho purisa jānāhi: pāpadhammā asaññatā. Mā taṃ lobho adhammo ca ciraṃ dukkhāya randhayuṃ I can deconstruct most of the grammar except that last sentence. Using a Pali dictionary, rhandayuṃ could relate to the word "rhan...

MN 38 Mahatanhasankhaya Sutta, about Sati(son of a fisherman)'s mistaken view

I was looking over this sutta again and I noticed that in reading it I glossed over this. Sati says: "it is just this consciousness that runs and wanders on [from birth to birth], not another" His fellow monks eventually bring him before the Buddha and he confirms his view. He rebukes Sati...

Which comes first: consciousness or sense base?

From the six sextets http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/mn/mn.148.than.html Dependent on the eye & sounds there arises consciousness at the eye. In this sutta, consciousness seems to be dependent on sense base and sense object. from the analysis of co-dependent arising http://www.accesstoin...

Re: the great vegetarian debate

I used to eat meat, but things changed and I've since cut back on meat dramatically. Like only a few times a year. Not vegetarian, but pretty close to it.
