Re: What is the Buddhist view of abortion?
A new life comes from name and form. Form is artificially destroyed and name need to go else where. This is killing. Killing is no good because it disrupted the flow of nature.

Re: Buddhism and politics
As someone interested in politics, I have briefly read about the Buddhist stance on politics but not a huge amount. Is strict Buddhism and strong political opinions compatible? I mean, is Buddhism essentially exclusive to a certain political beliefs or ideal, or is it generally quite open? As someo...

Re: How to explain Buddhism to Christians
Please do not waste time. Not everyone want to be advised on anything. Not everyone wants freedom because freedom comes with responsibility. Not everyone can face the truth.

Re: 12 chain causation: no intentions?
Intention is within volition formation, together with consciousness, within (name and form, craving, clinging existence). That seems peculiar. Why would intention not be a direct causal link expressed as such? We won't know. I am trained in western science, in the beginning I thought this is like w...

Re: 12 chain causation: no intentions?
You can understand it by penetrating the 4NT. Sometimes, what we understand is very hard to express, explain and discuss with others. As long as you are happy with it and feel that you are on the correct path, don't bother to put it in a flowery language for the sake of discussion.

Re: Arhatship, the a priori, set theory
Is arahat a word borrowed from braminism or a word unique to Buddhism? From the PED: Arahant (adjective/noun) [Vedic arhant, present participle of arhati (see arahati), meaning deserving, worthy]. Before Buddhism used as honorific title of high officials like the English "His Worship" ; a...

Re: Picking a sutta
I suppose it depends on the school of thought. Theravada is supposed to be learned and practiced, as though the individual can anticipate the results. Other schools, though, have students do what makes them uncomfortable so as to awaken from their conventional selves. In the sutta pitaka of tripita...

Re: Picking a sutta
Should we select a teaching like someone picking a flower. I believe it says this in the dhammapada. Is it a good idea to Choose a sutta which suits where we're at in our Dhamma progress and temperament? I'm going to work with the shorter discourse to Rahula sutta and see how that goes. You take ou...
