Re: Rapture in 7 factors of enlightenment

Thanks for all the replies. I would not think there are different kinds of spiritual rapture. I have never come across that before in the suttas. I have only seen sensual happiness and spiritual happiness being mentioned directly. After looking at the inputs here, I think there is only one kind of r...

Re: Rapture in 7 factors of enlightenment

It is rapture arising from seeing the truth in dhammavicaya (2nd factor). It is not the rapture of jhana (6th factor). While a higher level, due to the direct seeing of dhammavicaya, it is similar to the rapture below: Faith is a vital condition for joy. saddhūpanisaṁ pāmojjaṁ, Joy is a vital condi...

Re: Dhammapada verse 267

What does it mean by transcending both merit and demerit? As 183 puts it: 183. To avoid all evil, to cultivate good, and to cleanse one’s mind—this is the teaching of the Buddhas. At some point, when the mind is purified enough, there is no thought or motivation to avoid demerit or cultivate merit....

Re: Dhammapada verse 267

Of course, there are volitions. The volition to turn on the air conditioner is due to heat. The volition doesn't arise without condition. The reply to your question was because of your previous question. The volition for food and water is because of hunger and thirst. All due to causes and conditio...

Re: If human is the best realm

Yes its the best place for practice? Why? Because dukkha and sukkha are equally presented. Because the Dhamma is available. To understand why heavenly realms are actually hells for those who want freedom - one have just try to practice 8 precepts for week, mounth, year... in lay life. This experian...

Re: If human is the best realm

I think the Human Kingdom is the best Kingdom to practice Dhamma. Because here in the human realm you don't have as much happiness as in paradise or higher kingdoms and you don't have as much suffering as in hell or lower kingdoms. AN 7.70: Arakenanusasani Sutta — Araka's Teaching Seven beautiful s...

Re: Are women evil?

Ever wonder why the Buddha thought if the Bhikkhunis lineage was allowed, the existence of true dhamma will be shortened? I do not know why exactly. Shortly before the Buddha died, Ananda asked him a question concerning women: "How shall we relate to women, Master?" — "Do not look at them." — "But ...

Re: Stored food?

Can't monks hold a few days without eating? Do they need to have control over their food supply using fridges? Of course I wish they always have proper and tasty food. But I thought they would live more dependent to the laypeople. I guess it's because this is not practical in non-buddhist countries...

Re: Stored food?

IMO we need to adapt with time while practicing the wisdom of the Buddha. Perhaps, get some laypeople to store and reheat the left over food. If not, it is still not good to waste food
