Re: Are 'Focusing' Meditations Wrong?

I emailed Ven. Nyanamoli to double check if my representation was correct. He replied: "That's not quite accurate representation, but for someone not familiar with our take on samadhi, it's not too wrong either. You can boil the entire thing down to Sammaditthi sutta where it is said that there is ...

Re: Why schism?

The origin of the earliest different schools can probably be traced to different direct disciples of the Buddha. As these lineage is passed down generation by generation, it is something like the game of Chinese whispers.

Re: Focusing like an Owl

I thought there is only one Mara Devaputta who leading a host of retinue in Paranimmitavasavatti Deva realm (the rest of Maras are.more like psychological / body aspect), acting defiance to the Ruler of that heaven, Vasavatti Devaraja. But sometimes Mara was known as Vasavatti too, since he endeavo...

Re: Focusing like an Owl

Thank you. This is confusing because it's coming from Mara. Not all Mara are bad. Some are good. They are a kind of living in the Deva realm. I thought there is only one Mara Devaputta who leading a host of retinue in Paranimmitavasavatti Deva realm (the rest of Maras are.more like psychological / ...

Re: Volition and intention

Do you know the Pali word for these two, please? I do not think pali mastery alone will be the deciding factor in penetrating the dhamma. One can not know pali but know English. By comparing, two or three English translations of the same pali materials, one can know the rough meaning of a certain t...

Re: What is the eye?

Better apply common sense when trying to interpret sutta materials. Common sense will be more important than pali mastery alone.

In the suttas, the deva visited monks and Buddha. Devas can be seen; but not what you imagine devas to be.
It may not be the normal eyes.

Buddha 4 ways of dealing with a question

1.) He answered some questions directly.

2.) He analyzed some questions to determine what they meant.

3.) He answered some questions by replying with counter-questions.

4.) He put some questions off to the side.

Is this the best approach since it is the Buddha's approach?

Re: how to deal with demons

In a mental hospital environment, what some patients said may seem very supernatural. Some psychologists like Jung actually studied drawings and mental images of these patients. Jung himself have many experiences of seeing supernatural beings since young. I think usually in a dream state.
