Re: Did the Buddha endorse Animal Cruelty?

To me it sounds like he's just describing what the farmers already do when the oxen wanders into the crop.

DNS wrote: Sun May 02, 2021 10:04 pm Ajahn Chah was great. If he had been born in China or Japan, he probably would have been a famous Chan or Zen master. Luckily for Theravada, he was born in Thailand.

Re: What Ven.Ajahn Chah meant by "The Timeless Buddha"

I don't get it. How can you explain, using emptiness of conventional reality and labels? Is he saying that Buddha was not physically born? The self is a convention. Yes, but some people seems to get convention and physical reality messed up. They talk about it as all is a projection of the mind. I ...

Re: What Ven.Ajahn Chah meant by "The Timeless Buddha"

More From Ajahn Chah: Don’t be anything! Don’t be anything at all! Being a Buddha is a burden. Being a Pacceka is a burden. Just don’t desire to be. ‘I am the monk Sumedho,’ ‘I am the monk Ānando.’ That way is suffering, believing that you really exist thus. ‘Sumedho’ is merely a convention. Do you ...

Re: What Ven.Ajahn Chah meant by "The Timeless Buddha"

More from Ajahn Chah: Some people will hear the words, ‘Nothing is mine’, and they will get the idea they should throw away all their possessions. With only superficial understanding, people will get into arguments about what this means and how to apply it. ‘This is not my self’, doesn’t mean you sh...

Introduction to Insight Meditation https://www.amaravati.org/dhamma-books/introduction-to-insight-meditation/ Choiceless Awareness Meditation can also proceed without a meditation object, in a state of pure contemplation, or `choiceless awareness.' After calming the mind by one of the methods descr...

Re: Are women evil?

Are there any Buddhist texts which specifically address the wickedness of women? Great question, urocentrum! You ask about an aspect of the Blessed One's Dhamma that is far too little preached in this wanton and feminized age. I would say that it is in the Kunala Jātaka that we have the most compre...

Re: Which of these Mahayana/Vajrayana traditions are most compatible with the Palicanon and Theravada traditions?

Definitely Chan Buddhism (imo). They include the Agamas which are very similar parallels to the Pali Canon. They have a monastic clergy with Vinaya. The meditation techniques are very similar to Theravada meditation. It's my second favorite Buddhist tradition, after Theravada. Same. Chan is cool. :...

Re: Which of these Mahayana/Vajrayana traditions are most compatible with the Palicanon and Theravada traditions?

That's a ridiculous question to ask! its an impossible task, because posters would need to have extensive knowledge of every group on your chart in order to answer it. Or they can just answer from experience they've had with one or two schools in particular that they DO have knowledge about...
