I think I can see where you're coming from, chownah. I'm sorry I misjudged your post.

Re: Selfhood in religions and the best religion -- for davidbrainerd

chownah, I feel like davidbrainerd, while mistaken and perhaps coming off as a bit abrasive (to me, at least), he still raised a valid concern: sometimes Buddhists can come across as being deliberately obfuscating and, to some people, as has apparently been David's own experience, this can came acro...

Re: Selfhood in religions and the best religion -- for davidbrainerd

I guess it all comes down to what you mean by "I." I definitely exist, but I tend to overestimate how much of what I experience is "me" rather than just something I happen to be experiencing. The experience comes and goes, but the experiencing entity remains.

Re: Selfhood in religions and the best religion -- for davidbrainerd

Self is constantly redefined in Buddhism to always make me wrong no matter what I say. If I say something else, you'll redefine self again, however is needed to shut me up. I do not see that happening in this thread. You seem to be working from an inaccurate idea as to how we Buddhists define "self...

Re: Selfhood in religions and the best religion -- for davidbrainerd

Historians in the know generally agree that the historical Siddhātta Gotama did found a monastic order during the Mahājanapada era, which ended some three centuries before Christianity appeared on the scene.

Re: Selfhood in religions and the best religion -- for davidbrainerd

Something has to exist for thinking to exist, but it doesn't follow that that something is "self." You're assuming that for the experience of thinking to take place, the only possible condition is the presence of "self." That simply doesn't follow. As a matter of fact (and please forgive my multiple...

Re: Inspiring Words

It’s easy, very easy, to be against something. ... But being purely against ... means never being let down, and never being vulnerable. The horrors of the world descend on you, and you oppose them. But it’s not enough. There needs to be some positively articulated shared object, something that can ...

Re: Why grammar still matters in the 21st century

Let's be careful not to get classist, now. Language changes a lot over time, and it's often groups who struggle with access to education that tend to speak this way.

Re: Having just joined.

Thank you, everybody! :hello: welcome Do you adhere or incline to any specific tradition within the Theravada? I don't think that I do, although I'm curious about the Vipassanā movement and a socially engaged practice. I'd love to learn more about what your experiences have been with the various bra...

Thanks, Mr. Snyder. I'd figured it was something like that; I don't mind.

Glad to be here.

Having just joined.

Añjali . I made an attempt earlier to post an introduction, but it seems to have disappeared after I was told it was approved. (I tried to make a small edit; maybe that's what did it?) In any case, I'm a recent "convert" and hope to learn a lot here. I happen to live near a few wats, but I've been ...
