Re: Retrofuturist's Brief Sutta-Based Refutation of Abhidhamma

Regarding SN35.93, MN10, ec. Common Abhidhamma Argument #5 - Concepts are not dhammas (phenomena) ... The suttas you refer to are referring to dhammas. The translator has simply translated "dhamma" as "idea". I imagine it was Ven. Sujato. For SN35.93 it's Thanissaro: https://www.dhammatalks.org/sutt...

Re: Do these six points have direct quotes in the abhidhamma?

I quoted some comments from Ven Dhammanando on the other thread: Also, do you know where the four paramattha dhammas are mentioned in the Abhidhamma Pitaka? They are not mentioned by name in the Abhidhamma Piṭaka. Rather, the catuparamatthadhamma scheme is how the commentaries construe the material ...

Re: Retrofuturist's Brief Sutta-Based Refutation of Abhidhamma

For whatever reason, Mike is still wheeling the same wheelbarrow now on Page 18. Only he could possibly explain why. I specifically responded to a question by Pulsar, which seemed to further the confusion demonstrated by the OP. As you say, the quote from Ven D is often considered to be commentary....

Re: Retrofuturist's Brief Sutta-Based Refutation of Abhidhamma

Hi Pulsar, I'm sorry if you think I'm treating you or Paul unfairly. This is a discussion forum, where people post ideas and opinions. Paul has posted some rather forceful opinions, and I have posted my opinions. How can you say the title is misleading? He has taken the necessary steps not to mislea...

Re: The Dhamma is simple (if we want it to be)

Generosity & sila leads to concentration which leads to insight. I think it's a devaluation of the Buddha's words by insisting his teachings aren't complete. I have faith that the Buddha's teachings are complete. Whether what is preserved in the suttas is complete and/or understandable without exam...

Re: Nāgārjuna and Momentariness

If one looks at chapter 15 of the Mulamadhyamakakarika, it becomes evident that Nagarjuna must have had access to Sutta SN 12.15 in the Pali Canon - and that "Katyayana" is another version of "Kaccānagotta " It is an untraced parallel cited in the MMK and with a longer citation in the Madhyamakaśās...

Re: The Dhamma is simple (if we want it to be)

To be honest Mike... it doesn't sound like you find the Suttas are complete. Even a simple example of the Buddha's own words seems to send people running for additional instruction and complication... from the 'ancients' perhaps. It seems unlikely that the suttas are a literal recordings. Hence my ...

Re: Nāgārjuna and Momentariness

In his article "Between Arhat and Bodhisattva," Ajahn Amaro (Abbot of Amaravati Theravada Monastery UK) mentions SN 12.15 and Nagarjuna in the section "The Middle Way" (see link below). https://info-buddhism.com/Between_Arhat_and_Bodhisattva-Ajahn_Amaro.html :anjali: I certainly respect Ajahn Amaro...

You could very easily compile a set of suttas that address the topics outlined in the sutta above, and read them in sequence.

Metta,
Paul. :)
Sure, you could have some idea of the content.

:goodpost: I used to work as an information analyst in the health service, and I despair at the way these people misunderstand and abuse the data. That's why people usually speak of excess mortality. There is a lot of data on that, B, in case you're interested, but I didn't think you trusted data, except as support for your skepsis. :goodpost: I used to work as an information analyst in the health service, and I despair at the way these peopl...

Re: Retrofuturist's Brief Sutta-Based Refutation of Abhidhamma

This thread is taking strange twists and turns, right now it has become about commentaries, and popular Buddhist texts. But the thread is not objecting to popular text books on Buddhism which is in a beginner's domain. This is called a Theravada discussion, not a Beginner's. Issue is not commentari...
