Re: Therīgāthā, The Verses of the Elder Bhikkhunīs, Book One and Two (Week of May 2, 2021)

Aparāsāmātherīgāthā (Another Sāmā) Thig 3.1 In the twenty-five years since I went forth, I don’t know that I had ever found serenity in my mind. I had failed to find peace of heart, or any control over my mind. When I remembered the victor’s instructions, I was struck with a sense of urgency. Thoug...

Do you not derive some happiness for sending them away happy?

Re: Fake Speech

... There are deeper social meanings to these actions. Strict minimalism can imply clinging. Great points. I'm not always successful, but my aim is for small talk to be something of a gift to the person I'm speaking to, providing something genuine that will give them a positive feeling. That's how ...

Re: Do arhants thought generate painful feeling ?

I am somewhat confused by this conversation. Is pain (which arahants apparently feel) dukkha or not? If they [an arahant] feel a painful feeling, they feel it detached. dukkhañce vedanaṁ vedeti, visaṁyutto naṁ vedeti; https://suttacentral.net/mn140/en/sujato “Reverend Koṭṭhita, a perfected one shoul...

My pleasure, Mike. Yes, SN22.122 (Sīlavantasutta) & SN22.123 (Sutavantasutta) are quite identical suttas, differing only in ... umm ... I forgot  Hmm, yes, I didn't notice that they are both there... Here's Bhikkhu Bodhi's translation: 123 (11) Instructed (This sutta is identical with the prec...

Re: Do arhants thought generate painful feeling ?

Hi SDA: Regarding five clinging aggregates and arahants: sn22.122 ... Thank you for that. Very helpful! Note that the Sutta Central and Bhikkhu Bodhi reference is SN22.123 “Reverend Koṭṭhita, a perfected one should properly attend to the five grasping aggregates as impermanent, as suffering, as dise...

Re: Which of these Mahayana/Vajrayana traditions are most compatible with the Palicanon and Theravada traditions?

Hi Bhante, That brings back memories. As a teenager I had to study Psalm 137 in Anglican confirmation class. A rather unusual choice, but it was June '78 and Boney M's By the Rivers of Babylon was number one in the British charts. And so Roy Catchpole, our spikey-haired, lefty vicar, who was obsesse...

Re: Do arhants thought generate painful feeling ?

Thanks Mike. But what I understand from that quote is that what is going to cool down is whatever is felt, the feeling aggregate. I don't believe it means suffering since the cause of suffering is craving and attachment was already given up at enlightenment. If I'm wrong I trust I will understand c...

Re: Therīgāthā, The Verses of the Elder Bhikkhunīs, Book One and Two (Week of May 2, 2021)

I'm not sure that "tough" is the right term here. I think they are simply beyond caring or being embarrassed by such things. Tough people tell it like it is because they understand it is a big deal, but they have the strength not to flinch. These seem to tell it like it is because they realise it i...

See the link Mike posted, I agree that it certainly could be in reference to sex. Yes, these are tough women, who tell it like it is, not delicate "shrinking violets". I think that's a key takeaway message from these verses. They tell it like it is/was: [quote="Thig5.2] I adorned this body, so fanc...

Re: Do arhants thought generate painful feeling ?

I think this sutta is relevant: They understand: ‘Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is no return to any state of existence.’ If they feel a pleasant feeling, they understand that it’s impermanent, that they’re not attached to it, and...

Note that these translations are a joint project. From the Info for each of the translations: Translation description This translation aims to make a clear, readable, and accurate rendering of the Therīgāthā. The initial draft was by Jessica Walton, and it was completed by Bhikkhu Sujato in 2019. Th...
