Re: “Right View comes first”: SN 56.37, SN 56.44, dash of MN 117 (Week of April 11, 2021)

SN 56.37 gives a very inspiring image. But I can't help thinking that it sounds circular. You need right view to understand the noble truths, but right view is understanding the truths... “And what, bhikkhus, is right view? Knowledge of suffering, knowledge of the origin of suffering, knowledge of t...

Re: Proposed solution to the Jhana Wars debate

Greetings, So maybe pitithefool and ceisiwr (or others on each side) are willing to pause and work together to find such common ground first? I personally would love to see such a thing, it would be amazing and inspiring to me. There is nothing inherently good about consensus. It would be better fo...

Re: giving beggars question

I was under the impression that monks are not allowed to share their alamfood with others or beggars. There are certain items of sangha property that it's a Vinaya offence to give away, but almsfood isn't one of them. That is good, since it's a common practice for lay people to bring food to monast...

Re: "Secular Buddhists" answer to ven. Anālayo's ‘Superiority Conceit in Buddhist Traditions’

It can be all too easy to dismiss a sutta as being "late" simply because we do not like it. I agree. We see this played out sadly many times here. I've seen the nimitta of it at SuttaCentral too in the past. Something to be wary of. Yes, and a more subtle problem is when the terminology of later ex...

Re: "Secular Buddhists" answer to ven. Anālayo's ‘Superiority Conceit in Buddhist Traditions’

Here's another review. https://dhivanthomasjones.wordpress.com/2021/04/05/some-gentle-buddhist-polemics/ To go straight to the keystone of Batchelor’s secular Buddhism, his re-intepretation of the Four Noble Truths as ‘tasks’ rather than truths is based on a mistaken, even tendentious, reading of a ...

Re: Pali verse

Yes, there's some great stuff on Ānandajoti Bhikkhu's web site:
https://www.ancient-buddhist-texts.net/ ... -index.htm
In learning to chant Pali verses it's useful to have some basic idea about the metres.

Re: Jhana and the early Mahayana

There is quite a lot of evidence from the suttas that rupa is meant to be understood as the four great elements (ncluding the body) just as it's defined in the suttas and just as we understand it in the modern day. You sure about that? Understanding rupa as always referring to the four great elemen...

Re: no translations at all on suttacentral?

Hopefully a temporary glitch... In cases like this, it would be better to pose the question on the SC forum, which I've just done here: https://discourse.suttacentral.net/t/tr ... ared/19838

Re: Mahāsāṃghika Meditation

Perhaps it's useful to also quote this part of one of Ven Dhammanando's posts: What strikes me the most is that it seems to me that no sides acknowledges that both interpretations are actually possibile and have their strenghts and that the matter, and this is very unfortunate because I think everyo...

Re: Mahāsāṃghika Meditation

For those who missed it, here's Ven Dhammanando's collection of threads on Jhana Here are links to a few of the threads. I'm afraid some are rather lengthy, but you can save time by skipping all the ill-informed posts from the Vimalaramsi and Brasington followers and just attending to the posts of S...

Re: Guided meditations for anicca, dukkha, anatta

I was just listening to these links thanks! Can we get them on sutta central without the english translation? It is great to listen to both but sometimes I prefer pali only.. Hi Robert, do you mean can you get Voice on Sutta Central to just do the Pali? If you go to the setup wheel on the top right...

Abhidhamma, The last frontier: Yamaka

This proofreading project may be of interest to some here. At the very least, it's worth pointing out that Sutta Central has translations of most of the Pali Abhidhamma: https://suttacentral.net/pitaka/abhidhamma/pli-tv-ab https://discourse.suttacentral.net/t/the-last-frontier-yamaka/19829/1 In the ...
