Re: Jhānā

I don't think... I feel no need to take his objection here seriously. Sure, constantly reporting to the moderators is not " no need to take his objection here seriously ". Sure  In summary, regarding "jhana" as "trance" is so archaic & 1800s. Best to stick to grammar, as i suggested. I...

Re: Canonical defnition of jhana

MN 119's jhana pericope meaning "body" still stands as an interesting topic of discussion. The above has been discussed to death for many years The reason is this: in jhana, nama-rupa is still present. No, only "nama-kaya" is present rather than "rupa-kaya". However, why they are called "rupa-jhana...

Re: happy mother's day

want to exp everything in this life? no. the word for this can be "nihilism" ("natthikavāda"), which is "moral nihilism". "annihilationism" ("ucchedavāda") means believing a "self" ends at "death" many Buddhists, including scholar, mix up & confuse "natthikavāda" vs "ucchedavāda" kind regards

Re: Canonical defnition of jhana

lol "samatha" = "jhana" ;) This will serve as a debate thread here we go again  Most commentarial material that I've read seems to use the term access concentration to describe a state in which the hindrances are absent but the jhana factors are either not present or are not strong. Practit...

Re: happy mother's day

My mother was crying & philosophizing yesterday, talking about her friends who have recently passed away. Obviously, she thinks she may die soon (because she has 1.75 from 4.0 carotid arteries fully blocked and the specialist is reluctant to operate/stent due to her age and can't believe she is stil...

Thank you Assaji. Pamoda is used in the Anapanasati teachings.

Entering the first jhana, we abaondon sensuality
Entering the second, we abandon placing and sustaining the attention to the object
Entering the third, we abandon rapture,
Unlikely to attain arahantship with all of the "we" doing stuff.

Re: How is it possible to attain arahantship without jhana?

Its not possible to attain arahantship without jhana. Its even worse when jhana is misconstrued. Those who underestimate what jhana is will obviously underestimate what arahant is. Soon there will be Arahant-Lite, similar to Daniel Ingram.

Re: Jhānā

Don't be ignorant, DooDoot. "Trance" is used as a translation for jhāna by scores of Buddhists who are not Hindu. Educate yourself before posting these absurd claims. I am not ignorant. Jhanas are not "trances". To regard "jhana" as a "trance" is absurd. 63.... a fool who thinks himself wise is a f...

Re: Rapture in 7 factors of enlightenment

piti (rapture) in 7sb awakening factors is the same as piti in the 4 jhanas. no Piti is like an emotional thrill. For example, say you hear a joke. Someone might get a deep belly laugh, repeatedly focus on the mental thrill of it and continue to deep laugh. someone might just laugh lightly and then...
