Re: Overthinking the Dhamma
Give people a reason to “not to get caught up in it” I did, I said it can cause overthinking ...you’re probably not simplifying anything I wasn't trying to simplify anything, that's not what the original poster was asking Otherwise your contribution may be nothing but confusion for those who are un...

Re: Overthinking the Dhamma
Overthinking is an easy trap to fall into and can become an impediment to enlightenment. That's why I am constantly simplifying things so I can actually put The Dhamma into practice. Also be aware that this site can contribute to overthinking so its often best not to get caught up in it.

Re: What exactly is Vedana ?
...but how can you be sure a more concise instruction isn’t oversimplified? How can you be sure a simpler instruction isn't being overcomplicated? In many cases The Dhamma has to be simplified in order to actually practice it, otherwise it's just theoretical knowledge. How sure are you that the sut...

Re: What exactly is Vedana ?
Then how can you practice with this sutta understanding? How can one practice here and now so the dukkha doesn't arise anymore? Otherwise it is just book knowledge. There is no use for daily practice. :goodpost: Exactly! These long-winded answers, quoting slabs of suttas just complicate things so m...

Re: What exactly is Vedana ?
Vedana is feeling which is either pleasant, unpleasant or neutral. Why complicate it?
People give all sorts of strange definitions for Vedana and quote long slabs of suttas but the above is all you need to know to practice successfully.

Re: The use of the provisional self or 'degrees of self'
Ones hair is percevlived to be less 'self' than ones hands But the witnessing or mind-consciouness may be the hardest to cultivate the not-self perception of as it is generally closer to our sense of identity. Maybe we need to cultivate the perception that mind consciousness has no more self than a...

Re: Brahmins
Brahmins were the religious caste, the intellectuals and transmitters of metaphysical and cultural truth. They would have been the ones most interested in what the Buddha had to say, and would have approached him to hear his alternative teaching. The Buddha would have talked about "ascetics an...

Re: Brahmins
They were brahmins specifically, and not some other caste (when referred to as such in the sutta). and it was normal to address people of the brahmin caste as brahmins back then. like how it was normal to address nobles in europe by thier titles back in the day. I think brahmins even got offended i...

Brahmins
Why does The Buddha refer to Brahmins a lot? Why doesn't he just say "people"?
