Re: Do Arahants need to sleep?

Thanks for the comments. So is the consensus perhaps they do sleep but it's greatly reduced then? I read Buddha did sleep but for only 1 hour per night. Yet I'm not sure if this is the same "sleep" as lay people conceive. The reason I ask is I've heard Buddhists indicate that as awareness ...

Do Arahants need to sleep?

Since they are fully aware, are they immune to the dullness of consciousness which afflicts non-realized beings?

Perhaps their body sleeps while their mind stays in meditation...

Is there such a thing as Right Desire?

What is right desire? Of course all desire is suffering, but may not some desires lead to the end of desire?

sensual warmth happens, and here when you can recognize it as your mind you can also locate the leakage in lower abdomen and once you notice it(happens automatically) the craving stops. It is of course more steps and difficult and can spawn of entire year, before you can get into lower abdomen cavi...

Re: Are Vipassana Nanas silly?

Yes I see your point. The vipassana nanas felt more loose and undelineated to me because they could occur out of order, or not at all. Whereas to me, jhana seems very delineated, as in the Buddha's frequent explanation of the 1st, 2nd 3rd, 4th, and supramundane jhanas. Hi, just wanted to clarify th...

Re: Question about dependent origination

Free will implies that there is a person making all those choices. In the face of anatta, one could say that choices are being made which are driven by causes and conditions without a self behind them. This is a very good point! My understanding is that the truth of reality is that there truly is n...

Re: Are Vipassana Nanas silly?

Perhaps you should rethink this idea of yours about 1st jhana and length of time one should be able to stay in it. When you begin to measure things like this, you lose the view of impermanence and personalization. You also encourage 'becoming' and attachment to these states. 1st jhana seems more li...

Re: Are Vipassana Nanas silly?

There is, obviously, plenty in the instructions of modern teachers such as Ajahns Thanissaro, Maha Bua, Chah etc that is not explicitly in the Suttas, but it would be strange to dismiss the advice of experienced teachers. Likewise, one should use one's judgement about which elaborations are helpful...

Re: Question about dependent origination

Hi archaic, There have been several discussions on the topic of free will here on DW over the past few years. My computer is a bit slow at the moment but if you use the search function at the top right of the screen, you should find a couple of similar questions and some lengthy and useful threads....

Re: Question about dependent origination

Karma is the result of free will. OK, so for an arahant, who produces no kamma, do they have free will? I would say Kamma is performed due to free will If the Kamma is a result of ignorance there will be DO. That makes a lot of sense to me, thank you very much. While not important in Buddhism, imo,...

Question about dependent origination

I have an intellectual grasp of dependent origination. Currently I am reading Under the Bodhi Tree by Ajahn Buddhadasa Bhikkhu, which is wonderful and delves into many of the facets of dependent origination. My question however, is more philosophical. If everything arises from causes - everything is...

Re: lay people should still try

Thank you Dhammarakkhito for this wonderful and very important thread. Any amount of quiet sitting and calming the mind, or reflecting in mindfulness has to be of benefit to the path. How could it be any other way? I can't fathom the logic of saying a layperson shouldn't practice. I don't understand...
