Quakers

Hi, I've been looking into the Quakers recently. There seems to be a variety of different sorts of Quakers... The ones I'm curious about are the 'unprogrammed' Quakers... They don't have ministers or a creed, and their services are conducted mainly in silence. They practice a kind of 'silent waiting...

Help!

Hi.
I'm wondering... for Buddhists and Theravada Buddhism I'm particular, are there any beings, deities, spirits to pray to or invoke if you are in some sort of trouble?
I've heard 'paritta'? chanting can help with some things... What is that? How does it help? Thank you :)

Re: Bullworker, isometrics and blood pressure

I'm not an affiliate, and it works ok for me. I don't think it's for building big muscles, but for toning up and improving my strength, it works fine for me... I guess you get out what you put in? You can do moving exercise with both pieces of equipment... as you see in the videos? There is hype in ...

Bullworker, isometrics and blood pressure

I like to use this old school bit of equipment called a Bullworker. They've changed a bit since the 70's but are still quite similar. Had anybody else used one of these? I find it quite good for toning up without too much huffing and puffing. I've also started using something called an Iso-Flo, whic...

Re: Deva realm Buddhists

The suddhavasa (pure abodes) are inhabited by anagamis and arahants. Can there be communication between beings in the human realm and those Arahants in the pure abodes? Can they teach us or help us. I guess the Buddha was able to communicate or visit or observe this realm as he could tell us about ...

Deva realm Buddhists

Hello, from what I can tell, Buddha has devotees among the devas as well as human followers. E.g., Brahmā Sahāmpati.
What do we know about these followers and are there Arahants amongst the devas?

Re: Secular Buddhism

To me, my understanding, is that secular 'Buddhists' come at practice from a decided materialist view. So there can be no Karma, beyond this life, no rebirth. But that is rejecting aspects of the core view of Buddhism, intricately woven into the Buddha's teaching. There is a difference between havin...

Re: How to deal with ignorant brutes in a discussion

Don't think of them as ignorant brutes, and don't worry about winning arguments or anything else.
Practice kindness and patience, check any conceit in oneself.
Didn't the Buddha describe this path as the path of non-contention.

Re: Ajahn Amaro guided meditation

I heard another talk by Ajahn Amaro where he talks about a story of the Buddha and his disciple Ananda eating a beautiful meal. Ananda began to talk about how wonderful it was that the Buddha was indifferent to the taste of the food. But the Buddha told Ananda that he was wrong and gave Ananda some ...

Re: Child Lama. I think it is ridiculous.

I practice Tibetan Buddhism but I also like the teachings from the Theravada forest tradition. I find there is more similarity than you might realise. The skillful means can seem more elaborate at times in Tibetan Buddhism, but it is more a matter of style and emphasis. There has been ignorance on b...
