Re: Discouraged Feet Pointing Direction

Thank you all for your responses! What initially struck me was the seemingly impossible nature of a prohibition against having your feet pointed toward specific people or specific images while standing , but now that I know that we're talking about the soles of the feet, it all makes a lot more sens...

Discouraged Feet Pointing Direction

Hello! I was cruising our sister site dharmawheel.net, specifically the Zen sub forum, when I read this: I came from the Thai Forest tradition where pointing one's feet at the Buddha image is a no-no, so that's well-ingrained as well. Here is the link to the full topic: https://dharmawheel.net/viewt...

Re: An off the forum question please bear with me

Hello polo! I am a Software Engineer so I can offer you advice based on my personal job responsibilities. The only math I ever really have to use is trigonometry and matrix math, but that's because of the particular product that I work on. I'm sure there are lots of programmers who hardly ever have ...

Re: Trying to introduce an abusive alcoholic father to weed?

Hello holylotus! I think it depends on your father. Do you think it would be possible to get him to replace his alcohol habit with a marijuana habit? I've read anecdotes about people using marijuana to defeat their alcoholism (and in my opinion, marijuana is definitely much less destructive than alc...

Re: Let's discuss super normal powers.

If someone claimed to have supernatural powers, would you believe them? If you read about them, if you saw a video, if there were eyewitnesses who swore something supernatural happened, wouldn't most people still think there was something nefarious going on and not believe it? Secondly, it seems to ...

Re: Guidance on Anger

1.is it possible to lock the door? 2.Can you be honest with her and say it bothers you. :namaste: Akashad, thank you for your reply. I might not have described the situation well enough, but locking the door would be locking my wife out of our master bathroom. Given that, I'm sure I don't have to e...

Re: Guidance on Anger

Thank you all so much for your thoughtful and helpful replies, they have really inspired me in this regard. It is especially helpful to be reminded that the reaction of shame after becoming angry is also the result of unrealistic expectations of perfection. I will make it a point to concentrate to t...

Guidance on Anger

Hello friends, I need some guidance on some recurring anger. At home, our morning routines work out such that when I'm taking my morning shower, my wife is brushing her teeth, washing her face, etc. at the sink. This naturally requires my wife to turn the faucet on and off, on and off. Every time sh...

Re: Some questions and points on Buddhism

Without faith in kamma and the births caused by it, the practice will not have a motivational support. Why would a person follow any rules and limit himself if he believes that after death there will be nothing? Hi Antaradhana :hello: , A person might "follow rules and limit himself" even...

Purifying the cause of tension in the body via body scanning. My own theory is that when the body is hard and conditoned, the mind is weak and over stimulated. When the body is soft, the mind is more sensitive, can discern more, and is thus strong. budo, could you please explain what you mean by &q...

Re: Dhamma that triggers SJWs

Outside of the biological constraints of pregnancy and lactation (and possibly the gender pay differential based on them) there are no reasons for one partner rather than the other to adopt a particular role. This is a potential source of conflict or family break-up for nearly all modern families, ...

Re: Your successes in overcoming obstacles and hindrances to meditation

I also changed my approach to the meditation object. Rather than viewing concentration in the same way one might view studying something under a microscope, straining hard and not really enjoying it. I decided to make the breath as pleasant as possible. Once you use the breath as a means to calm th...

Re: Buddhism and personalities

Hello Manopubbangama :hello: I'm not sure I'm familiar with the phenomenon you're referring to, could you PM me as you suggested? Is it your experience that this is more likely to occur with Buddhists of Western backgrounds (assuming that's what you mean by "converts")? Also, what is the '...
