Re: My name is

Yes, Kacci khamaṇīyaṁ, kacci yāpaṇīyam (roughly, how are you bearing up, how are you going?) would be standard. I think this the usual phrase in the suttas (?) It's the stock phrase when visiting a sick person. I don't think we have any record of how healthy people would make phatic enquiries after...

Re: My name is

Excuse me. What is modern spoken Pali? Is Pali really spoken? I thought it was found only in books. It's not really a spoken language, but some learned folk are able to converse in it. When I was staying at Island Hermitage, Sri Lanka in 1979, the Sri Lankan abbot & a senior German monk would have ...

Re: Question about Nanarama's stages of purification

I am reading his book on the seven stages of purification and I am overwhelmed with the amount of detail. Not only are there the right jhanas with all their subtleties but there are the subdivisions of the various stages of purification My question is: is it necessary to have comprehensive intellec...

Re: Translating pañcupādānakkhandhā ???

From recollection, "upādāna" is a noun &/or adjective. It is not a verb and is not a past participle. Therefore, cannot be translated as: " attachment/attaching to the five aggregates " or " five clung-to aggregates ". You need to determine what type of compound is being used - please see: https://...

Re: covid vaccine: yea or nay?

In general I am not of fan of vaccination (for myself). However, if the covid vaccination is a condition for being able to resume my (paused) roaming lifestyle in Asia, I will certainly have the injection. It will be interesting to view the positve & negative effects of the vaccination in various co...

Re: What is 'fart' in pali?

From Buddhadatta's English Pali Dictonary flatulence : (m.) udaravātābādha. flatulent : (adj.) udaravātika; vātabahula. In the commentaries somewhere (or Visuddhimagga?), there is a story about a young woman who wanted to go forth. However, her family wanted her to be a bride. As a ploy to avoid thi...
