Re: Vibhaṅga and Conception
Greetings everyone, In relation to another thread I was reading the vibhaṅga in relation to this passage on conception: At the moment of conception in the element of desire, in whom are seven sense-bases apparent? In womb gestated beings, at the moment of conception seven sense-bases are apparent, ...

Re: SN 41.8 Jain founder doesn’t believe 2nd jhana possible, B. Sujato interpretation of vitakka illogical and incoheren
Just as 'placing the sound wave and connecting it to the ear drum' is just an incomplete subset of vaca (speech, vocalization), 'placing the mind' is an incomplete subset of 'thought', and not even the important part! I think you are confusing speech with producing (or hearing to) any, even meaning...

Re: lifespan of other beings
Hello, I'm sure many of you are familiar with the various suttas that talk about the lifespans of devas. I am wondering if there are any suttas or even commentaries that talk about the lifespan of the other realms, such as the brahma, hell and preta realms. If so can somebody direct me to some? Tha...

Re: Best Guide for Breath Meditation For Beginners
But some misguided people, who are not able to do it, go around criticizing the method. The above appears to say the Buddha was "misguided"; including for teaching "kayanupassana" & "sabbakāyapaṭisaṃvedī". I never said Buddha was misguided, and I never would say su...

Re: Best Guide for Breath Meditation For Beginners
Wondering where I can find a good guide or book with steps for breath meditation suitable for a beginner, who does not have access to a meditation center or in-person guidance. Pa-Auk / Vism breath meditation is (imo) truly the best. My limited experience and experience of some other people, who ar...

Re: Commentary and the Commentarial Tradition
Maybe more practical criteria than four mahāpadesā for what is Dhamma and what is not would be Buddha's instructions to Mahāpajāpati: 8.53 Brief Gotamī, those things of which you might know: ‘These things lead (1) to passion, not to dispassion; (2) to bondage, not to detachment; (3) to building up, ...

Re: Old age, Sickness and Death
Therefore, I am asking does Abhidhamma define ending of jīvita as "marana" ("death")? Haven't checked the canonical Abhidhamma, but here is what Vism (VIII.7 in English translation) says: Herein, death (maraṇa) is the interruption of the life faculty included within [the limits ...

Re: Two Nibbana elements
There is of course just one Nibbana, but what the sutta is pointing out is that whilst alive the Arahant still has to experience past kamma in the form of the aggregates whilst at the end of life these aggregates cease without remainder. Obviously any speculation beyond that is not wise. Do you agr...

Re: Old age, Sickness and Death
Death can be taken in both ways: as cutting off the life faculty (jīvita), which is a type of rūpa, and as a concept. But I'm not sure about old age, sickness... Please kindly provide an reference. Thank you Reference to what? That jīvita is a type of rūpa? Check any Abhidhamma book, chapter on rūp...

Re: Two Nibbana elements
The point is these two words are used synonymously in the Pali texts, parinibbāna and its derivatives are not reserved exclusively for the death of an arahant.confusedlayman wrote: ↑Wed Jun 03, 2020 2:45 pm So nibbana means buddha never had physical pain while using his body?

Re: Two Nibbana elements
Just a short notice: as K.R. Norman pointed out, there is no difference between Nibbāna and Parinibbāna - they are synonymous, and taking Parinibbāna as a designation for Nibbāna after death of an Arahant is a misconception, which probably arrised due to the name of the Mahāparinibbāna sutta, and fu...

Re: Commentary and the Commentarial Tradition
I guess the question remains, "How do we know a commentary is as reliable as the text it is examining?" Do we just accept it all? The older the better? So...how to do it responsibly... For me, the only reliable interpretation we have nowadays is classical Buddhaghosa's commentaries + Vism...
