Re: What is the difference between saññā & citta vipallāsā ?

I found an article that somewhat explains it. I was looking something along the lines of: The distortions of the mind work on three levels of scale. First, distortions of perception (sañña-vipallasa) cause us to misperceive the information coming to us through the sense doors. We might mistake a rop...

Re: What is the difference between saññā & citta vipallāsā ?

I think there are four types of Sanna vipallasa. There are four types of vipallasa (seeing nicca in anicca, etc). And there are 3 levels for each (sanna, citta, ditthi). My question was specifically about the levels. While I understand what ditthi level is (full blown world view), the difference be...

How exactly does that occur? Does one actually think "such and such is beautiful", or what?

What is the difference between saññā & citta vipallāsā ?

Hello all, In AN 4.49 it mentions 3 levels of perversions ( saññā, citta, diṭṭhi ) for anicca, dukkha, anatta and asubha . there are these four perversions of perception, perversions of mind, perversions of view. Which four? ‘Constant’ with regard to the inconstant is a perversion of perception, a p...

Re: Why did other early schools alter the Canon?

Yes there's many accounts that tell very different stories about the same people. Uppalavanna being a prostitute b4 a Bhikkhuni in dharmaguptika texts and literally being a virgin b4 becoming a Bhikkhuni in Theravada texts for instance. Could there have been multiple nuns (or monks) with the same n...

Greetings Paul,

Yes, that is a big plus. At least something positive.

Re: Why did other early schools alter the Canon?

Greetings, I'm inclined to agree with the above responses from TRobinson and DNS. Alex - do you believe the variations were intentional, deliberate and motivated? (Don't worry, I won't lambast you if you do... I'm just curious to see what you think, having now considered those two perspectives). Me...

The Sarvāstivādins really ran with that idea.
I should have added that khandhas, as a category, always "exists" while one in Samsara. PariNibbana is the total end.

Re: 3 characteristics of conditioned things.

All three characteristics are implicit simultaneously in things that are transitory (anicca). To contemplate arising, passing and staying don't mean to take the time to se things arise, stay, cease chronologically in time, no need to wait ... you never would be able to contemplate anicca in your ag...

Why did other early schools alter the Canon?

Hello all. I was reading a bit of Agamas. I wonder, why did they have different suttas with sometimes different stories? Why didn't all/most of early schools use the SAME sutta-pitaka that was formed during 1st council? I understand that translation into different languages, maybe loss of some sutta...

Right intention (samma sankappo)

Hello all, 1) What is the difference between intention of ill will vs intention of harmfulness? Is it because ill will is against living beings and harmfulness can be directed 2) Why does right intention contain renunciation, non-ill will, non harmfulness rather than renunciation, non-ill will, non-...

Doesn't have to be living.

Who is your favorite sutta teacher?

Hello all.

1) Who is your favourite English speaking Theravada (or EBT) teacher/monastic focusing deeply on the suttas?
2) Or meditation teacher.

Thanks.

Re: 5 or 8 precepts are minimum for stream entry?

One doesn't get enlightened by following a list of rules. That said, Following the 5 precepts does seem to be described by the Buddha as being behavior for stream entry. The factors for stream entry are more than this though. Sila is one part. Right. Sila is one part that I had a question about.

5 or 8 precepts are minimum for stream entry?

I've heard some saying that 8 precepts are bare-minimumfor stream entry. However, in the suttas it seem to suggest that 5 (or modified 5 precepts, right speech is expanded) are required. Of course the more precepts one follows the better. But I'd like to know the minimum. “Householder, when five fea...
