Re: Two Types of Jhāna
MN 140, MN 52 Talking about fake news. A supposedly critical part of the practice according to you is the emerging from jhana (into a normal state) and then penetrating the Dhamma in this normal state. Yet the Buddha completely fails to adhere to your ideas. He abides in jhana and his mind inclines...

Re: Two Types of Jhāna
The commentarial method of explanation stipulates that the meditator emerges from the jhana attainment and practices insight contemplation with a mind made sharp and supple by the jhana. However, the suttas themselves say nothing about emerging from the jhana. If one reads the suttas alone, without...

Re: Two Types of Jhāna
kasina is used to induce jhana impermanance is seen after u exit out of jhana So you investigate impermanence in a 'normal' state? Why bother with jhana in the first place? Is there anywhere in the suttas that states one comes out of any of the four jhanas in order to develop wisdom? MN 140, MN 52 ...

Re: Two Types of Jhāna
Knowing, understanding and discriminating doesn't necessarily involve vittaka & vicara. Even in daily life this can be seen. Understanding (paññā) requires reflective thought (paṭisañcikkhati). How can one reflect when the mind is in an immovable state (āneñja), and without vitakka-vicāra which...

Re: Two Types of Jhāna
MN 140, MN 52 It's of little value to throw out a couple of sutta numbers without actually quoting the parts that you think backs up your view. From MN 52 Again, with the abandoning of pleasure and pain…a bhikkhu enters upon and abides in the fourth jhāna …Then they reflect (paṭisañcikkhati) : ‘Thi...

Re: Two Types of Jhāna
What is "object-scrutinising Jhāna"? "Jhāna is twofold: that which (views or) examines closely the object and that which examines closely the characteristic marks. Of these two, "object-scrutinising" Jhāna examines closely the devices [e.g., Kasiṇas] as mental objects. Insi...

Re: Are Homosexuals allowed to ordain?
I don't see the difference between a homosexual or a heterosexual ordaining... at the point of ordination they are surely aiming for asexual.

Re: Learning and counterpart sign comparing with some other description
It's always a pleasure to see the nuts & bolts of the Buddha's Dhamma discussed so enthusiastically. Even if I have to intentionally blur my focus to do so.

Re: Satipaṭṭhāna Meditation Report
I get the pain. I can relate to some of the same experiences from way back. Perhaps "observing" or investigating the arising and passing away of what is readily discernible and observable would help. Were you angry or lustful today? How did that arise? How did it pass away? How were you le...

Re: Is sati discernment?
The way I understand is, sati is remembering the teachings and being mindful of them. Discernment is a function of wisdom, of knowing what to do when you remember the teachings, so you can choose a wholesome response. So sati makes discernment possible. 👍 Exactly. Quite a few 'mindfulness' traditio...

Re: Origins of Kasina Meditation?
Actually... you don't. And the sutta I referenced seems to disprove your point. That's not to say that they can't be accessed via the fourth jhana but it doesn't appear to be a necessity. I told you already, one can't simply jump into arupa-attainments ignoring previous 4 jhanas. Pali Canon has eno...

Re: Origins of Kasina Meditation?
What about it? You're meant to build a disc... be blind to its colour... repeat the mantra earth... earth... earth etc. and somehow this relates to the Buddha's teaching... Note that the Infinitude of space, consciousness, nothingness and neither perception nor non-perception are all perceptions ac...
