Re: Abortion
There was a sad case of a woman being refused an abortion in Ireland recently. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/apr/08/inquest-savita-halappanavar-abortion . abortion is killing a womb where consciousness already landed... its funny people want to avoid giving Human life to others when its rare...

Re: Asura realm
The Asura (drunkards) is a clan of human beings. To judge from the Lokacintāsutta they must be awfully tiny humans. “Bhikkhus, once in the past a certain man set out from Rajagaha and went to the Sumagadha Lotus Pond, thinking: ‘I will reflect about the world.’ He then sat down on the bank of...

Re: How to reconcile time spans in the canon with history
In this context then, how can we reconcile the time spans mentioned in the canon with what we know from history and pre-history? Even in a very liberal estimate of the span of history and pre-history, modern man has existed for many 50,000 to 80,000 years, and civilization with kings and princes, m...

I'm not sure why you have the paragraphs in opposite order to the sutta. If you just look at the sutta: "Bhikkhus, how do you conceive it: is form permanent or impermanent?" — "Impermanent, venerable Sir." — "Now is what is impermanent painful or pleasant?" — "Painful, venerable Sir." — "Now is wha...

Re: Does Classical Theravada believe in "beings" and "selves"?
Dear CT subforum I read the following on the internet: Classical Theravada followers had the interpretation of the word "Thatagata" as the "Being/Satta/Atta" in those (Abyakata Vagga) specific suttas's commentaries. Therefore, most of the non-classical Theravadins who disrespect the commentaries, h...

The answer I saw did not really answer the question. Or maybe I did not understand the translation.

Re: challenging Ajahn Brahmali on parasites
You misunderstand Robert's point. Bacteria are not living being by dhamma standards. Microscopes don't change the dhamma. I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Savatthi at Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's monastery. Then Ven. Radha went to the Blessed One and, on arrival, ...

Re: Will the people who call the arahants just by name, attain Nibbana?
There does seem to be some correlation in the suttas between the attitude of the audience members and their attainment of the Path. There is a tradition of asking for forgiveness in case one has spoken disrespectfully to any Noble Ones in the past, as insulting a Noble One is said to be obstructive...
