Re: "Gata" translated as "Immersed"

I think this is partly due to the type of meditation he teaches, i.e having a full body awareness.

Re: The definition of 'jhana-lite' and 'jhana-heavy', and hopefully a better way to differentiate

Coming to this forum, and any general buddhist community, you will find a lot of dishonest insincere people who wish to suck up all your time and energy. Best to stay away from communities such as these, and if you do stick around, find out the time wasters and block them, and focus on those who ar...

The definition of 'jhana-lite' and 'jhana-heavy' https://notesonthedhamma.blogspot.com/2021/01/the-definition-of-jhana-lite-and-jhana.html Hopefully we can use more accurate labels to differentiate the two interpretations of jhana. Re: The definition of 'jhana-lite' and 'jhana-heavy', and hopefully a better way to differentiate

Seeing as how MN 43 teaches that the physical body faculty can’t experience any āyatana besides phoṭṭhabba then “kāya/body” in your quote here obviously refers to the nāmakāya. Please quote the relevant section Sure: “Reverend, these five faculties have different scopes and different ranges, and do...

Re: The definition of 'jhana-lite' and 'jhana-heavy', and hopefully a better way to differentiate

.... If someone reads this simile, and genuinely thinks the Buddha isn't talking about the body we have. They are being dishonest and they very well know that. Seeing as how MN 43 teaches that the physical body faculty can’t experience any āyatana besides phoṭṭhabba then “kāya/body” in your quote h...

Re: The definition of 'jhana-lite' and 'jhana-heavy', and hopefully a better way to differentiate

Another problem is the term Ekaggatā, translated as "one-pointedness". The instances in the Canon doesn't mention it to be indicating minute focusing, a good article is "How Pointy is One-Pointedness ?" by Thanissaro Bhikkhu. Not in one Indian language, Ekaggatā has this meaning. In Bengali (একাগ্রত...

Re: The definition of 'jhana-lite' and 'jhana-heavy', and hopefully a better way to differentiate

The problem is there is a lot of clinging among people when there authorities are challenged, lot of conceit, people like Sujato called the "lite" jhanas as Jhana-banana. People like to cherry pick passages, use dictionary entries without taking in the context from the suttas. (1) “Here, secluded fr...

Re: MN 111 jhana 'lite' vs. jhana 'heavy', sutta vs. vism. 'jhana'.

It's laughable that anyone could seriously think kamehi is referring to objects rather than desire in the first jhana formula. Even if we were to accept that interpretation of kamehi referring to objects, there are lots of ways to be secluded from objects without having to enter vism. redefinition ...

Re: MN 111 jhana 'lite' vs. jhana 'heavy', sutta vs. vism. 'jhana'.

There's a general perception, that blotting out senses, intensely focusing is the meaning of "concentration". This is a story by Thanissaro Bhikkhu where he mentions this : The second state was one I happened to hit one night when my concentration was extremely one-pointed, and so refined that it re...

Re: MN 111 jhana 'lite' vs. jhana 'heavy', sutta vs. vism. 'jhana'.

Another problem that the proponents of shutting off senses misses that blotting out the senses doesn't get rid of the inherent problem . This is from Anguttara 5.73 : “Bhikkhus, without having abandoned six things, one is incapable of entering and dwelling in the first jhāna. What six? Sensual desir...

Re: What miraculous healing (or any interesting miracle) have you witnessed, or heard from credible source?

Listening to this monk talk about his father's near death experience made me extremely grateful... @51:17-59:15 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySkqvOHL7qY That was awesome! Thanks for sharing that. I'll outline summarize a few interesting points from that 8 minute section. (Rough summary from memo...

Re: Does pornography leads to rebirth in a lower realm?

This is a suggestion , you might try, it is somewhat effective : Go on youtube, search for videos based on parts of the body you are attracted to , for e,g : breast. It is just fat wrapped in skin. Try to remember the image , whenever you feel lustful, remind yourself of that image, till the lust go...
