Re: How can Dependant Origination be established?

Dependant origination is the Dhamma according to Lord Buddha(peace be upon him).if it fails logically, the Dhamma is illogical and I can't accept something against Basic reason.Lord Buddha wouldn't want me to accept something blindly. The Buddha says that whoever sees dependent co-arising sees the D...

Re: How do YOU meditate?

That being said I still think Thanissaro's method shouldn't be considered incorrect. You seem pretty familiar with Ajahn Ṭhānissaro’s work. Have you read the short essay Jhana Not by the Numbers ? I think it does a good job of filling in the background with respect to why he teaches meditation the ...

Re: Difficult and embarrassing problems with moral purity

It appears that most or all monasteries are closed because of COVID so I am having to settle for a householder path, which is very unfortunate. However, I find that addictive tendencies I use to cope with the stress of everyday life, when I try to get rid of these addictive tendencies, withdrawals ...

Re: Sotapanna and namarupa

You say this because you miss the point that there are two different consciousnesses in play here: one that precedes namarupa (the consciousness that gets reborn) and one that issues from it (the sense consciousness of the 5 aggregates). "Oh but Buddha refuted that guy that said 'this very consciou...

Re: Sotapanna and namarupa

Of course they didn't, but its clear that's what they were trying to describe and that's why they listed 4 things for what is really 1 thing. The reality of our experience as immediately known within ourselves doesn’t need or benefit from a reductionist or materialist approach that wants to locate ...

Re: Sotapanna and namarupa

Its because they lacked the word brain that they go the long way and have the 4 aggregates. Hence the 5 aggregates is really just body (number 1) and brain (the other 4). That's how I see it. Electrical impulses in the brain rather than the form of the brain then. They probably didn't know about el...

Re: Everything is not us or mine

Hi all, We are not our perception. We should not rely on our thought, because it is not us or mine, feeling is not mine, consciousness is not mine, etc. If everything is not mine, how can we make for example, decision, who or what we can trust if we cannot trust ourselves? We shouldn't rely on our ...

Re: Living in the present.

Hi, I should live in the present all the time. Not thinking about the past, nor the future. And in the present time, I should have sati/mindful all the time. Like meditating all the time. Am I correct? I don't think so. Don't dwell too much on the past or future but you can't ignore them entirely. ...

Re: How long ago the Buddha died for each deva plane

That's not what Independent in the teaching means, it means you have Supermundane knowledge that does not depend on others, i.e. you're beyond mere faith. It doesn't mean that you require no further guidance/teaching. While I don't doubt that they could benefit from it, I don't believe they require...

Re: How long ago the Buddha died for each deva plane

It's true in that such a person is independent of others and will not come to an eighth birth regardless of who's around to teach them Dhamma. They don't need a more accurate interpretation, they mostly need to apply what they already know and not get lazy. But of course they can get a nice boost f...

Re: How long ago the Buddha died for each deva plane

This is why if you die a Sotāpanna, you will likely be taught the true dhamma by someone who knows a more accurate interpretation of the buddha dhamma than you would know. Sotāpanna has no need Not true at all, by the way... It's true in that such a person is independent of others and will not come...

Re: Property

After all, the forest dwelling ascetics of Buddha's time say living in abject poverty with no property and no money makes them free, but then they are subjugated to laymen and become like pets depending on them for food, like a stray cat. Had they kept their property and money and only renounced se...

Re: Not self for non-returnership and no self for arhats

There is Identity View, and there is Conceit. Since Identity View is broken at stream entry, this does not seem to be what the original question was referring to. One is a belief, the other is a habitual activity. Beliefs are also a kind of habitual activity, otherwise they could never be changed w...
