Re: Ajahn Brahm declares* that the Buddha was wrong about the second noble truth: the cause of suffering is not 'craving

If this remains civil and without personal attacks and charitable attitude from everyone, it could become a great discussion. I hope it will continue.

Re: Saṅkhārā means significance

Nirodh27 wrote The Buddha warned us that the Dhamma can be dangerous as a snake , fostering craving for existence and non-existence in very subtle ways when we think that we are following it instead. In which sutta Does Buddha says this? It sounds to me like you are saying Buddha said his foundatio...

Re: Ajahn Brahm declares* that the Buddha was wrong about the second noble truth: the cause of suffering is not 'craving

The big question is really if it is the sense experience that is blocked or not and as Ceisiwr correctly says, it is an overreach, it is not there. The rest is something that one can clear up when he actually tries to get the pleasure of renunciation. I think that this passage from Phra Ajaan Suwat ...

Re: Saṅkhārā means significance

No, since the Buddha didn't either where he could many times. I dont' want to take a useless view, one that the Buddha never used to teach, abandoned as well by him, that have a bulletproof alternative and that is certainly a bringer of Dukkha and go outside my domain. I'm not taking them as self a...

Re: Saṅkhārā means significance

You are going further by yourself, overreaching and adding to what I'm saying. I've never gone into the territory of negation or affirmation of the reality of a self, limiting to say that, when we speak of something worth acquiring so happiness, in our control, constant the presence of it in my exp...

Re: Saṅkhārā means significance

The Buddha did not answer the Brahmins because He don't want his answer to be one-sided without analysis. For the Buddha mentioned Himself a Vibhajjavadi (Analyser). Those misguided ascetics and brahmins always think that "There is no Self" in term of Annihilation. But the Buddha taught t...

Re: Contemplation of suicide

What you said makes sense, but i was thinking along the following lines: If death represents the ascetic note of existence whereas suicide represents the hedonic note, then there is an interdependence between the two that should eventually lead to the same insight, if there are insights to be gaine...

Re: Contemplation of suicide

Yeah, the contemplation of death will bring you - The urgency to practice, the samvega knowing that your time is limited from old-age and death unless you want to pass all your life in unease and the arrival of death in pain and fear. - The knowledge that your body is impermanent and you will be sep...

Re: Saṅkhārā means significance

As for going around saying "there is no self" while the Buddha never did, I would suggest caution because if you are asked "there is no self" and you respond "no" you side with the annihilationist and you are so taking an annihilationist position even in this extreme ca...

Re: New book: The Only Way to Jhāna by Ajahn Nyanamoli

Just to be clear, no-one is contesting the training of Nyanamoli or saying that it is encoraging laypeople to entertain the training without warning and hiding what the outcomes will be, but, due to the fact that is a training for Monks and for decades in modern times Jhanas were "sold" al...

Re: Sankharas and the Nyana Sutra

"Samskara" in Nyaya is used to refer to the mental imprints, impressions, or modifications in the mind that are caused by experience or knowledge. These "samskaras" are not merely passive residues of past experiences, but they can actively influence present cognitions and future...

Re: How to Gain the Jhānas of the Suttas?

This article also shows how Analayo has completely wrong understanding and translation of vitakka and vicara in his agama translation. http://notesonthedhamma.blogspot.com/2023/03/bdk-ma-middle-length-chinese.html He was trained in SL. So, I suppose it's hard not to take for granted the traditional...

Re: Saṅkhārā means significance

The Subject (The "I am") can be born just like any other sankhara due to the fact that it is a sankhara concocted from a mind that still have the underlying tendency to conceit and crave. Now this reads more like the self isn’t real. Rather than being a Dravyasat, it’s a concept only. Whe...

Sankharas and the Nyana Sutra

I've asked chatgpt about usage of sankhara and samskara in the proximity of the time of the Buddha. I've found many examples, but one is particularly interesting and if anyone was aware of this Disclaimer: Chatgpt could simply be mistaken In "Nyaya Sutras," an ancient Indian text on logic ...

I am sure you meditate too like my favorite Italian scholar who spent quite a while in India. . With love :candle: You will make me blush one day, please don't stimulate my conceit "I am" so much   Btw how is the Scholar? Tucci? Pensa? I've done a lot of retires with Pe...
