Re: Zen, Zazen and Dogen

The problem I see with encultured Buddhism is that it is held to account for every type of religious or mystical experience had by members of that culture. The Buddha had one particular type of insight into the human condition, but when someone who identifies as 'Buddhist' has any sort of experienc...

Re: Thoughts on Dogen and Shikantaza

Do you think Dogen strayed from what we understand as the Dhamma? Yes… Zen would burn the scriptures Do you think Shikantaza is a practice that can bear the same fruits as what we understand as Samatha / Vipassana? No… :meditate: Would you like to offer a little more rationale and information that ...

Re: Thoughts on Dogen and Shikantaza

I've practiced at Theravada and Zen centers and in regard to the practice, there are very little differences. Both include meditation on the breath as a foundational practice. Both include walking meditation and other types of meditation. The differences are primarily in doctrine; bodhisattva vows ...

You might get more answers over at Dharma Wheel https://www.dharmawheel.net/ They're a good group of people, helpful and knowledgeable. They know more about Dogen/Zen/Mahayana/Vajrayana. Thanks but I am specifically curious re' a Theravadin take on Dogen rather than Zennies - they're liable to offe...

Thoughts on Dogen and Shikantaza

Hi, I wonder what your thoughts are on Dogen and the practice he recommends - Shikantaza? Essentially, 2 questions: Do you think Dogen strayed from what we understand as the Dhamma? Do you think Shikantaza is a practice that can bear the same fruits as what we understand as Samatha / Vipassana? Than...

Re: Definitive Source

Greetings, So how do people make up their minds as to what is valid , in terms of Dhamma, and what is watered down by culture, time and other influences? The Suttas are the shared inheritance of all Buddhist traditions. Therefore, if you're after the Buddha's teachings, the Sutta Pitaka (as opposed...

Re: Definitive Source

No, opinions vary, but in general we could say that Theravada was one of the 18 early Buddhist schools. It developed as we know it today around 250 BCE at the Third Council. Mahayana, as we know it today goes back to about 100 CE, about 350 years later than Theravada. So in general, people have bel...
